THE mystery behind the signpost to Frome on a totem pole on the Falkland Islands has been solved following a story printed in the Frome Times last month.
After seeing the story in the Frome Times, Jennie Smith from Frome got in touch to say she and her husband had put the sign up six years ago.
Jennie said, “When I saw the article, it really made me laugh! I had forgotten about the sign in all honesty – it was six years ago. My friend lives on the Falklands – we were pen pals when we were younger and have been friends ever since – and we were visiting for her son Craig’s 18th birthday and our wedding! It was all very last minute but it was a wonderful day.
“Anyway, whilst we were there, we’d driven past the pole so many times, we decided to stop and have a look. Seeing all the signposts, we thought Frome should definitely be on there! Myself and my husband Andrew aren’t originally from Frome but we love it and it is our home town now. Our friends love it as well! We’re always having to send things from Frome and when they visit, they insist on visiting their favourite shops Cafe La Strada and Amica.
“It was my friend who made the sign and I’m really pleased the distance was spot on! Andrew put the sign up but wasn’t too keen on being up the ladder – it’s so high!”
