Frome MP Anna Sabine has voted in favour of legalising assisted dying at the third reading of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) bill in Parliament last month.
MPs voted to legalise assisted dying on 20th June, when they gathered in Parliament to vote for the final time following months of debate over whether to allow adults who are terminally ill, subject to safeguards and protections, to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life.
Overall, the bill was backed by 314 votes to 291 and will now go to the House of Lords for detailed scrutiny and potential amendments.
Following the vote, MP Anna Sabine issued the following statement. “This has been one of the most emotional and thoughtful debates I have been part of. I have supported this bill since it was introduced by Kim Leadbeater and I believe it’s right that people facing terminal illness should have the choice to end their lives on their own terms.
“I have received hundreds of emails over the past year and I want to thank everyone who shared their views – especially those who opened up with personal stories.
“There is still more scrutiny ahead, but I’m proud to support legislation that brings compassion, dignity and choice.”
