A PUPIL at Oakfield Academy has been presented with a commendation award by the town’s mayor for her fundraising litter pick.
Bea Baylis, who is in year 7, has been litter picking around Vallis and the Trinity Church, Selwood Road area and has raised £316 for The Climate Coalition. She has already filled 45 bags and now aims to continue until she reaches 100 bags of litter.
Bea said, “You see litter everywhere on the walk to school. If nobody does anything, it will get worse. I like to do something; it is better to help and get outside and be active.”
Bea was presented with her award from Frome’s mayor, cllr Philip Campagna, who visited the school recently.
“I was very surprised and excited to receive the award,” said Bea. “I was also really amazed to see mum and dad in the Oakfield Hall. I don’t know how they kept the secret from me (they aren’t normally that good at secrets!) Once I can fill 100 bags, I’d like to do another challenge, but I am not sure what yet. I might continue with litter picks.”
Cllr Campagna said, “It was a real pleasure to present a Mayor’s Commendation to Bea Baylis, Year 7 at Oakfield Academy. Bea demonstrates how aware young people are about our local environment and climate issues. We all have a responsibility to safeguard the future for Bea and all young people in our community.”
The mayor’s commendation awards are given to individuals, groups or organisations in Frome that provide support when it’s needed the most, or those who volunteer and give their time for free.
The full list of those receiving the mayor’s commendation award will be issued by Frome Town Council in November.
