Sat. 24th Oct. Southern League Div. One Frome Town 1 – 2 Cirencester Town
Town went down to high-flying Cirencester in a hard-fought battle.
The Ceanturions struck first through Aidan Bennett but Robert Hobbs levelled for Frome mid-way through the first half.
Town missed a golden chance to take the lead on the stroke of half time when Joe O’Loughlin was brought down in the box but his spot kick was saved by visiting keeper, Alex Harris.
In an end-to-end second half, Cirencester made the breakthrough, with Jonny Dennis firing home the winner to send his side up to second with Town dropping to 8th with ten points from six games prior to Tuesday night’s trip to Sholing.
“Clearly we are all disappointed with Saturday’s result,” said Manager Danny Greaves. “In a funny way, as a group, we can take pride from the reaction. It shows how far we have come in the last year. We now expect to win every game and when we don’t it’s a catastrophe. We just lost our first game at home in the league for 12 months, where our ever growing supporters have seen some great football in the main!
“We lost a game against a top side (who would easily be top of the form table in 2020) which could have gone either way with a missed penalty and one cleared off the line before half time. This without the experience and quality of Marcus Mapstone, Matt Smith, Jon Davies, Jake Jackson and James Carey.
“I think the season will be like this. Teams will drop points as with so many games teams in quick succession, teams will have injuries, unavailability for those logistically challenging midweek trips, not to mention COVID.
“We have to move on from these disappointments quickly, and stick together as a group, supporters included as when you really get behind us, we are stronger. You give the boys that extra confidence and belief that we can achieve anything. It’s no surprise our home form has been as good as it is.
“We have put in 2 very good performances in the last week. We didn’t hit those levels on Saturday, but although we lost on Saturday, key moments change games, and they didn’t go for us, or we didn’t do enough at those key times on the day.
“We are disappointed whenever we don’t pick up three points in any game, whoever we play. We all know the expectations at this club, from the supporters, the Board, but also within our dressing room.”
