THE Merlin Theatre Company is about to take on their biggest challenge yet as they prepare to put on a full blown musical in just 24 hours.
The show has been cast, lines and songs learnt, but the actual direction, choreography and technical side will take place over the 24 hours, starting on Friday 17th July.
The musical they have chosen to perform is Rent, and the finished show will then be performed to the public at 7.45pm on Saturday 18th, after just over 24 hours of rehearsals.
Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
The cast includes many familiar faces from the Frome musical theatre scene, many of whom have just finished performing in Frome Musical Theatre company’s production of ‘Hairspray.’
This production will kickstart a year-long programme of events for the Merlin’s 40th birthday with all proceeds and sponsorship going to the recently launched Lights Up! campaign. The Merlin needs to raise £30,000 match funding for their Arts Council grant application for new lighting and sound equipment.
Tickets for ‘Rent’ are £10 each and can be bought online merlintheatre.co.uk or via the box office 01373 465949.
Please note; The show is recommended for 16 years plus due to the adult content.
