A MUCH respected and long-serving GP in Frome, Dr John Moxon, who died on 3rd June 2019, stipulated in his Will that a sum of money be made available to Frome Museum, an institution that he loved visiting.
In particular, he wanted some historic but damaged books in the library to be professionally rebound, and his wish has now been carried out.
Conservation bookbinder, Stephen Glendinning was commissioned to breathe new life into two very special tomes with strong local connections as well as being nationally important. One was an 1817 first edition of Abraham Crocker’s Elements of Land Surveying. Crocker set up the first printing works in Frome and had close associations with the Blue School. The other book is unique, being a selection of designs and drawings produced by JW Singer and his staff around 1900.
Treasurer of Frome Museum, Brian Marshall said, “These priceless books have been beautifully restored and are now on display at Frome Heritage Museum in North Parade. In the photo, Stephen Glendinning’s handiwork is being admired by Penny Lines, Dr Moxon’s daughter, and by Jon Ryman, who selected the texts to be rebound.”
