Students from Frome College spent an interesting – if cold Friday afternoon recently, visiting many of the businesses on the Marston Estate to find out what they do.
This project enabled the students to learn more about work and careers, and in the longer-term, will also allow the town council to work more closely with businesses in this area of the town.
Councillor Jean Boulton said, “We uncovered some interesting businesses tucked away, including a sculpture technician re-making sculptures in durable material for his clients, ‘Beyond the Fridge’, who make placemats and magnetic notice boards, and Beau Nosh catering. The students were very impressed by Brewis, who sell machines to drill channels under roads without digging them up and by Plumbtech who gave them free keyrings!
“At the business breakfast, to be hosted by Dennis Maps on the Marston Estate on 1st March, we are hoping to provide guests with a map of the Marston Estate, which will clarify by category what businesses are there. Our hope is that this will help to identify what businesses exist and see if there may be useful links to make between enterprises.”
Whether you are based on the estate or not, the breakfast event is open to all local businesses and the town council encourages local enterprises to come along. There will also be a chance to look around the factory and see how Ordnance Survey maps are made.
