TWO veteran bands will be playing at Frome’s Cheese and Grain over the next month, bringing decades of live music experience to the town stage.
Sham 69, a punk band formed in 1975, will play on Friday 31st March, then Tinariwen, a world and folk music collective started in 1985, will play on Saturday 29th April.
In 2014, after numerous lineup changes, Sham 69 started their much acclaimed ‘World At War’ tour in reaction to the world’s current state. This took the band across three quarters of the world and included a successful sell-out tour of the USA. Much in demand, the band carried on sweeping across Europe to conclude back in UK.
The band have released albums regularly since the 1970s, with their most recent offering, ‘It’ll End in Tears’, coming out in 2015.
Their Cheese and Grain show will start at 8pm this Friday, 31st March. Tickets cost £16.50.
Tinariwen is a Grammy Award-winning music group known for blending Tishoumaren, world and folk music, and is originally from Azawad, Mali.
Forming in 1985, they made songs about issues facing Tuareg people, and started to record music with the intention of making it free for anyone who could provide a cassette tape, which ended up being widely traded around the Sahara region.
By 1998 the group came to the attention of French world music ensemble Lo’Jo, and in 2001 the groups joined together for a performance in France at the Festival Au Desert. The appearance brought more attention to Tinariwen and consequently the group made more appearances at different festivals throughout 2001.
In 2011 they released their fifth studio album entitled ‘Tassili’ and had made an appearance at the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. Tassili won the award for Best World Music Album at the 54th Grammy Awards, followed by a huge tour and television appearances.
Their Cheese and Grain show will start 8pm on Saturday 29th April. Tickets cost £22.50.
