Rainbows head to the beach!

FOUR Rainbows from 2nd Frome went on a steam train adventure, organised by Girl Guiding Somerset as a transition programme from Rainbows to Brownies.
Kirstie Jones – leader of 2nd Frome Rainbows reports, “On Saturday we left Bishops Lydeard station on a steam train heading for Minehead, but as we were delayed by half an hour, 2nd Frome Rainbows decided to sing to the rest of the rainbows and leaders in the carriage.
“We had the pleasure of entertaining our County President Margaret Maltby and our County Commissioner Ali Stone. We got to Minehead and headed straight to the beach, where we made sand castles, dug holes, made ponds, had a well deserved ice cream and took part in some of the new Brownie programme activities.
“We had a lovely tea made by some Somerset guiders, followed by a disco and entertained by lots of glow sticks. We slept in two different halls, and the Rainbows were soon in bed and the leaders led by example and some of them were soon snoring!
“Early rise …. 6am woken by some loud Rainbows, but we were soon making new friends and playing games in the garden. Hot waffles and maple syrup for breakfast and then a hasty walk back to the train station, we boarded the steam train and played eye spy with some very exhausted Rainbows.
“They had an amazing time and made lots of new friends from Somerset. It was an amazing experience which all Rainbows and leaders enjoyed.”

  • The Phogues return to Frome for two Christmas shows

The Phogues – Somerset’s top tribute to The Pogues – return to The Tree House for their annual Christmas shows this week.

Endorsed by the late great Shane MacGowan himself, they deliver an uplifting, energetic and true to form tribute to the legendary Celtic folk punk band – with classics such as Streams of Whiskey, Fairytale of New York, Whiskey in the Jar, Fiesta, Broad Majestic Shannon, The Irish Rover and Pair of Brown Eyes (among many, many more) on the setlist.

Event organisers Good Shout Events promise a festive knees up on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th December, backed by top local support.

  • Enjoy festive late-night shopping in Frome

Cheap Street and King Street are inviting residents and visitors to enjoy a relaxed and festive late-night shopping experience on Friday 19th December, supported by Frome Town Council.

From 5pm to 7pm, King Street will be closed to traffic, and many of the independent shops there and on Cheap Street will remain open to shoppers. Both streets will come alive with festive food and refreshments, music and seasonal activities designed to bring a warm Christmas atmosphere to the heart of Frome.

Musical entertainment will fill the streets, with a DJ playing Christmas favourites from 6pm and further live music bringing in the festive spirit. Children will also have the chance to send a letter to Father Christmas at Comrade Bear’s Closet, who will host a dedicated Santa’s post box.

  • Christmas comes to Frome!.

Christmas has arrived in Frome with festive lights, fundraising displays and community events across the town.

Thousands of residents filled the town centre for the annual lantern parade and Christmas lights switch-on in November, marking the start of the festivities. Since then, a range of Christmas events has been taking place, including local residents holding their own Christmas lights displays to raise funds for charities such as Fair Frome.

Christ Church hosted a Christmas tree festival, with various groups decorating trees and often raising funds for local causes. The Frome Lions and Rotary Club Santa Float has been travelling around residential streets, also raising money for charity.

After three sell-out shows, The Animal Guyz are coming back to Frome’s Merlin Theatre in the New Year with their wildly entertaining and educational show.

“This spectacular performance is dedicated to ‘all creatures great and small’ and features life-sized crocodiles, sloths, reindeer, penguins, orangutans – and even a spraying skunk bursting onto the stage right before your eyes, and no real animals are used!” said Craig, the original creator and Animal Guy performer. • Golf club raises over £90,000 for charity

A golf club in Frome has raised more than £90,000 for charitable causes since it began fundraising in 2010.

Orchardleigh Golf Club has held a series of events over the years, including competitions and raffles, in support of Dorothy House Hospice Care, as well as other charities such as Somerset Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer UK and Diabetes UK.

Most recently, the club held a cup day, raising £3,000 for Dorothy House Hospice Care. The hospice provides personalised care to people in the community nearing the end of life. Club member Jim Worsley presented a cheque to Dorothy House fundraiser Katherine Bowhay and thanked sponsors and players for their support.

  • Ukulele group raise funds for local causes

Frome’s popular ukulele group, The Frukes, recently raised £1,200 at a charity gig.

The sold-out performance at the Silk Mill raised the funds for local charities Time is Precious, which supports children and their families in hospitals and at home, and Songs for the Memory, a singing group for people with dementia.

“It was a great evening,” said group member Roger Southard. “We played a mix of old and new songs, we had a bar, and we played two one-hour sets. It was fantastic.”

Thank you so much to everyone who joined the town in marking the start of Christmas on 21st November what a wonderful night it was! And thank you to the organisers and the many who turned out for a brilliant Cobble Wobble on 23rd November too!

As promised, here is a little background on some more of my councillor colleagues.

Andy Jones has interests in education, finances and the Frome Festival. Polly Lamb, Councillor for Park Ward, is heavily involved in the planning team and eagerly supports women’s voices within the council.

Lisa Merryweather is passionate about mental health and supporting young people. Sara Butler fervently supports the ecology and natural habitats for wildlife. Anne Hills is heavily involved in repurposing digital items, she is the instigator of our White Ribbon campaign and worked with Prosper Frome to campaign for our long-awaited banking hub, now happily dispensing cash and serving residents.

  • Dementia singing group receives Christmas funding boost

A singing group for people with dementia in Frome has received a funding boost from a local charity to support their Christmas celebration.

Songs for the Memory received £750 from the Frome Masons and will use the funds to host a Christmas lunch for members.

One of the organisers of Songs for the Memory, Debby Webster, said, “The Masons’ support really helps us to keep our Songs for the Memory singing sessions free for the local community, something we are very passionate about.”

Songs for the Memory is a singing group for people with dementia and memory problems, and their carers. They meet every Tuesday at the Masonic Hall from 1.30pm to 3pm.
