With local elections for Somerset County Council taking place in just a few weeks, voters in Mendip are being urged to make sure they are registered before Thursday 13th April.
The county election takes place on Thursday 4th May and people must have registered before the April deadline to be able to vote.
The call for voters to sign up comes as the Electoral Commission launches a national voter registration campaign to encourage as many people as possible to register ahead of elections taking place this year across the country.
Mendip District Council is now also reminding voters in the district that they need to register by Thursday 13th April otherwise they won’t be able to take part in the Somerset County Council elections.
Stuart Brown, Mendip District Council’s chief executive and electoral registration officer said, “May’s elections are now just around the corner and I would urge anyone not yet registered to vote to do so as soon as possible.
“Registering to vote online is a straightforward process that only takes a few minutes to complete and means that you can have your say at the ballot box on the issues that affect your life.”
Emma Hartley, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission said, “Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are particularly less likely to be registered to vote.
“So if you have moved house recently, then make sure you’re registered correctly. If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Somerset.”
