SHARE is hoping to start a repair revolution by holding weekly repair sessions, where people can bring broken electrical and electronic items and expert ‘fixers’ will work with them to repair them, if possible.
Starting on Saturday 9th April, SHARE will host repair sessions from 10.30am – 12.30pm on Saturday mornings. People will be able to bring small electrical and electronic items in to a drop-in repair ‘cafe’, and spend some time with an expert fixer, figuring out the problem and trying to fix it on the spot. There will also be advice on what to do with more difficult problems, or if the item cannot be fixed.
SHARE hopes that the sessions will help people to think about repairing items that break, rather than simply discarding them. “Repairing your favourite things can be easier than you think,” said Helen Johnstone, co-project manager at SHARE. “Come along to our repair sessions and you’ll soon gain confidence and learn some new skills.”
Waste electrical and electronic items contain many harmful chemicals and too many of these items are ending up in the waste stream. In many cases they can be repaired, saving people money and helping the environment.
The repair sessions will be extended in future to cover all sorts of items, including clothing, bikes, toys and furniture. Check the website at sharefrome.org or ask at SHARE, at 3A The Bridge, Frome, for further details.
SHARE will also have details of several local businesses that can repair or recycle electronic items, so that nothing needs to go into the household waste.
SHARE hopes that the tide is turning against ‘disposable’ items. As more people learn what can be repaired and how to repair it, they will be more likely to buy items that are built to last.
