A PROJECT to mark the last 100 days of the centenary of World War 1, of knitting poppies for Remembrance displays, saw hundreds being made by the people of Frome.
In August this year, the Frome branch of the Royal British Legion sent out a plea for people to make poppies to be used in Remembrance displays across the town.
Jane Norris, chairman of the Frome branch said, “We were amazed and rather humbled by the response. Hundreds of different pattern poppies in red for remembrance, blue for animals remembered and, white for peace were received. These are now being attached by different groups in the community.
“The Frome Memorial Theatre volunteers affixed many at the Assembly Rooms; Wesley Church undertook a three-metre by two-metre camouflage netting, and the Friendship Club that meets on Monday and Thursday at the Frome Football Club contributed with some very enthusiastic fixing.
“Others just popped into the venues that had been advertised on social media and Frome FM.
“Many thanks goes to the named – but mostly anonymous – donations. Poppies have brought people together. Please look out for their installation in Frome this week. The Frome Memorial Theatre, Frome Town Hall and other places will have the poppies on display. These then will be kept for use by others, as a named project in Frome to mark the Centenary of Armistice.
“What a wonderful town is Frome!”
