A GROUP of local campaigners are hoping to save Sun Street Chapel so that it can be used as a community hall in the future.
The venue in Sun Street is privately owned and up for sale, but the campaigners want to purchase it and offer it as a hall for the community, instead of being converted for residential use.
The current owner has agreed to take Sun Street Chapel off the open market for six months, if a deposit of £5,000 is made by the town council, so that campaigners have time to raise funds.
250 signatures requesting the town council to support the campaign was presented to the town clerk recently.
Campaigner Pippa Auton said, “The Sun Street Chapel is a unique community asset having been previously used to host jumble sales, live performances, parties, local committee meetings, art exhibitions and last year, a successful week of events organised by local artist Stina Harris ‘Celebrate Women’.”
