A major restoration project is underway to save the famous Valentine Gas Lamp in Frome, which is a unique dedication to St Valentine.
After 20 years the rusty cast iron column needs to be stripped down and repainted. The lantern head needs substantial repair, having been distorted out of shape by heat over time. The usual life expectancy is only 15 years for lantern heads. The George V posting box has been removed by Royal Mail for repair and restoration.
Technology has moved on and the lantern head will contain a new electronic control unit that automatically opens the gas valve to light the lamp when it gets dark and shuts it off during the day.
Last, but not least, the nearby bench needs to be repaired and repainted.
The total repair cost is estimated at £12,000, assuming labour is largely provided by volunteers.
The Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp group has been set up by the friends and family of the creator of the lamp, Reg Ling, to carry out this urgent restoration work, preserve information relating to its interesting history, and to ensure its future as the only working gas lamp of its type in Somerset.
Please telephone Reg on 01373 467592 or email enquiries@valentinegaslamp .com if you can help in any way with practical, financial, or moral support.
Donations are welcome – cheques should be made payable to Friends of the Valentine Gas Lamp and sent c/o ‘Lyndhurst’, 82 Forest Road, Frome, Somerset BA11 2TQ.
David Twist, on behalf of the group said, “We have enlisted the support of five local schools: Hayesdown First School, Mells Church of England First School, St. John’s School, St. Louis Roman Catholic School and Nunney First School, and local artist Stina Falle, who have created artwork and poetry which is now on display on the restoration shield.”
