Film fans in Keyford are holding a special event on 5th March to mark the death of Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr, who died in January.
The event will be a screening of Tarr’s award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies at The Crown Inn.
Organiser Simon Keyes said, “Werckmeister Harmonies traces the collapse of the social order in a remote Hungarian town following the arrival of a sinister circus featuring a giant whale.
“Renowned as a pioneer of ‘slow cinema’, his films are characterised by long takes, elaborate camera movements and stark black-and-white cinematography. They include The Turin Horse and the seven-and-a-half-hour masterpiece Sátántangó. Keyford Kino will be screening his award-winning film Werckmeister Harmonies (2000).
“Whilst his films are a million miles away from Hollywood entertainment, he is one of the most original and accomplished cinematic voices of our time. Werckmeister Harmonies is one of the strangest films you will ever see and is a rich and mesmerising experience when you settle into its brooding atmosphere. The screenplay is by László Krasznahorkai, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2025, so this is a double tribute to two great Hungarian artists.”
The film will be shown at The Crown Inn in Keyford at 7pm on Thursday 5th March. Entry costs £10 at the door (cards accepted).
