FRIENDS of the River Frome are appealing for the community to share their memories of the river for a new project.
About the ‘Frome River Memories project, the group says, “The river Frome has long been a source of pleasure, well-being and recreation for the people of the town and we’d like to capture this for posterity. We’re launching River Memories to collect memories of what the river has meant to the people of Frome over the years.
“We’re looking for stories, pictures and even objects related to people’s engagement with the river.
“Do you remember playing by the river as a child? Do have a photograph of a family picnic or a boating trip? Do you remember when the river flooded or the engineering works which were done in the Market Place? Do you have any historic pictures?
“We’re willing to come and interview you and would be very interested to see any photographs you have of the river in times past.
“And you can help us! If you have some spare time to offer, we can train you as an oral historian. Or if research is more your thing then maybe you could look through the museum archives or old newspapers for us.
“Thanks to the financial support of Frome Town Council we can provide training free of charge. We’re also looking for someone to help co-ordinate the River Memories project so if you have some relevant skill and experience do get in touch.”
