ARTEFACTS from the early Middle Ages, found around Frome by ‘Frome Finders’ – a group of metal detectorists – have gone on display at Frome Museum.
Frome Finders say that the exhibition of artefacts – called ‘Shining Light on the Early Medieval History of Frome’ – highlights the need for local people to be aware of the town’s ‘immediate heritage’ – “especially in the light of proposed green field property developments,” they say.
About the exhibition, Frome Finders say, “Did you know an Anglo-Saxon King of all England had his palace in Frome? That the first treaty with the Scottish people was signed in Frome? That Frome had a Saxon parliament? That St Aldhelm was a Saxon Prince and was the first Bishop of Sherborne and Malmesbury? That Frome had its own coin mint, coins were minted for Edward the Confessor and King Cnut?! That there were Stone Age burial chambers on Frome Field? And that there were Saracen stones found in Frome, including a stone circle on Frome Field?
“These amazing facts and more are shared with visitors to our special exhibit at Frome Museum.”
The ‘Shining Light on the Early Medieval History of Frome’ exhibition continues into the late summer. Frome Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
