Following continuing public concern about excessive speeding in and around the Frome area, the Avon & Somerset Speed Enforcement Unit recently carried out three days of high visibility speed checks at 54 sites in the area.
Particular efforts were made on the Berkley School area where speeds of up to 95 mph have recently been recorded.
Ashley Reay from the Mendip Community Speed Watch team who accompanied the Speed Enforcement Unit said that the results were mixed, with some areas showing improvement, while other areas did not, resulting in several hundred motorists being reported for prosecution.
Ashley said it was most disappointing to see parents who had just dropped off their children at Berkley School, then driving off at high speeds in full view of the speed enforcement team who obviously recorded these high speeds. These parents will be prosecuted for excessive speeds.
Inspector Mark Nicholson expressed his gratitude to both Community Speed Watch and the Speed Enforcement Team for their actions, adding that the issue of speeding still remains a high priority for many of our communities and the public across the Mendip area. These operations will continue as a result and will be well publicised beforehand on the force website. He said, “My message to all drivers is simple, please slow down to a safe and legal speed and act as a ‘pace’ vehicle to the other drivers behind you.”
