Saturday 4th December Frome RFC 15 Grove RFC 21
FROME RFC welcomed old foes Grove RFC to Gypsy Lane on Saturday 4th December, looking for a third win of the season.
The home side started strongly playing down the field, with the wind behind them. After a penalty in the midfield, Frome opted to kick for the corner and from the ensuing line out, the forwards set up a maul which saw scrum half, John Benstead, dotting down for the first try of the day.
Frome continued to press, but a determined defence by the visitors kept them out for a large part of the first half, but eventually Frome put together a great run of phases, with captain Alex Mallon squeezing over to give Frome a 10-0 lead.
However, the home side didn’t have it all their way when, from a rare visit to Frome’s 22, Grove scored a converted try after a line out, saw the ball moved quickly to the midfield and the back rower broke through and despite a last-ditch tackle, was able to off-load for a converted try, seeing the sides go in at half time 10-7 to Frome.
The second half was more even as Grove took advantage of the slight slope and went into the lead when their centre broke through to feed the supporting player for another converted try. The was shortly followed by another score when they extended their lead, with the No.8 breaking through to score.
Frome were determined to get something from the game and reduced the deficit when flanker Will Button forced himself over, unfortunately the conversion drifting wide.
Frome continued to press in the last 5 minutes, but stout defence kept them out and Grove held on for the win.
Player Of The Match went to James Howard.
This Saturday 11th December, Frome RFC travel to 4th place Newbury Blues.
