Frome College’s robotics team ach-ieved major success last month, finishing third in a regional technology challenge and winning a sustainability award.
The team attended the South West Regional First Tech Challenge in Bristol, where they were tasked with designing and building a robot capable of collecting and scoring artefacts into a target.
The First Tech Challenge is a competition enabling young people to develop skills and broaden understanding of STEM education and career pathways.
After repairing some minor damage to their machine upon arrival, the team held first place for most of the day. However, they were beaten in the final round, finishing third overall.
Design and Technology Department leader Ceri Bryne said, “I am so proud of everything this team achieved, working many nights to a very tight deadline, fuelled by biscuits and cakes.
“All the hard work, sweat and tears have paid off. Here’s to next year, when we come back bigger, better and more informed.”
The team also won a sustainability award for their plans for the future.
A parent of one member, Drew Gardener, said, “Being part of this competition has been remarkable for my son. He has felt heard and seen, and it has made a huge difference to him. It is all he has talked about. I am incredibly proud of them all and I’d like to say a huge thank you to Frome College, who really have done wonders in supporting him and the team.”
