Frome Park Bowling Club’s season continues to go well with more very good results on the greens over the last two weeks.
The Ladies in particular have kept up their challenge at the top of the Wild League hoping to clinch the top spot, but it is going to be a close run affair as they still chase current leaders, Prattens.
An away trip to Norwest saw them win 57-44 and pick up 10pts with the best triple of Hilda Lee, Lesley Elms and Gloria Buchan winning very comfortably by 20-10. This was followed by a 41-41 draw away at Paulton, with one winning triple of Pat Tanton, Val Church and Gloria Buchan 19-11 helping to secure 5pts.
The best result of all was the short away trip to the other side of the Mary Bailey playing field to play against local rivals Frome Selwood, the home side being no match for the Park ladies, who ran out very easy winners 53-30, winning on all three rinks to pick up a very useful maximum 12pts. On this occasion the best rink to win was Joan Curtis, Olivia Grant and Margaret Jennings 23-9.
A friendly match away at Bath Ladies Bowling Club also resulted in a victory for Frome Park ladies by 49-41 with the triple of Barbara Robbins, Olivia Grant and Sue Bird claiming a good win by 17-10.
The ladies are having a good season and their confidence is on a high and they are hoping their good form will continue for a few more important games.
The Park’s mixed team also inflicted another heavy defeat on local rivals Frome Selwood in the Mixed Mid Somerset league match, this time at home, to claim bragging rights for the season with a confident display of bowling to win 67-44, winning on 2 rinks to pick up 10pts. The best winning rink for the park was Olivia Grant, Ted Lake, Alan Totterdell and Mike Gulliford who were always in control, playing some good bowls to run out easy victors 26-10.
One major disappointment for the club was the men’s quarter final defeat to Taunton in the Turnbull Cup, the visitors proving to be too strong and inflicting a heavy defeat on the home side by 103-46. This was the end of a good run for Frome in this competition. Their victorious opponents Taunton have since gone on and beaten Yeovil 91-56 to win their semi- final clash and will meet Ilminster in the final.
More importantly, the men bounced back to form the following evening to beat Wedmore in their final Mid Somerset league match to win 81-62, winning on 3 of the 4 rinks to secure 14pts and ensure they remain in Division 1 for next season.
The winning rinks were; Kim Pitts, Pete Jennings, John Curtis, Alan Totterdell 25-15, Wayne Pitts, Richard Phillips, Colin Henning, Steve West 22-16 and Pete Wheeler, Terry Drew, Trevor Elms, Mike Gulliford 24-9.
The Men’s ‘A’ team hosted Weston Bath ‘A’ in the County League Premier 2, a very close match resulted in a draw on shots but the home side had 2 winning rinks to pick up 7pts, which was a very useful return as they try and stay mid-table and keep out of the relegation battle.
The following Saturday they again played at home, this time against promotion chasing Victoria of Weston-super-mare. A tough game was expected and the Park played very well to win on 2 rinks to pick up 4pts but the third rink went down to a heavy defeat, overall score 65-57. Still a good effort by the home side, this being their only home defeat in the league this season, with only two away matches left to play.
The two winning rinks were; John Pritchard, Richard Phillips, Alan Totterdell, Mike Gulliford 18-13 and Peter Wheeler, Wayne Pitts, John Curtis, Steve West 25-20.
The Men’s ‘B’ team have unfortunately suffered with two defeats, firstly an away match at Bloomfield ‘C’, was a very unlucky 1 shot loss 58-57, winning on two rinks and picking up 4pts. Norman Seviour, Ted Lake, Eddie Maidment, Brian Indoe 22-14 and Roy Miller, Alan Cottle, Kevin Gregory, Terry Drew 24-16. The away trip to Keynsham ‘C’ was not so good with a heavy defeat 65-44, a disappointing result and only managing to pick up 2pts with one winning rink.
On Sunday the club held their Triples Day, the event was in question due to the weather forecast but the decision was made to play and as it turned out it was the right one. After a damp start the majority of the day was dry if a little windy at times and 30 bowlers from the club enjoyed some good competitive but friendly matches.
Congratulations go to the winning triple of Myra Drew, Eddie Maidment and John Curtis with three wins from four games to claim the Cup ahead of the very unlucky runners up of Val Church, Pete Jennings and Terry Drew, who also won three games but had an inferior shot difference.
