LOCAL community group, Sustainable Frome, celebrates its tenth anniversary this month and will be marking the occasion with a special event at Frome Town Hall.
Sustainable Frome is a community organisation for people living in and around Frome who are concerned about the impact of our current way of life on the planet and would like to do something about it.
It was founded by Peter Macfayden and a group of about 40 others in 2008. Since then, many different people have been involved, in all sorts of ways.
Rachel Bodle from Sustainable Frome said, “There have been a diverse range of projects, campaigns and events going on as part of what Sustainable Frome does.
“For example, we’ve supported various film evenings, events and groups around the town – the Apple Group and several Apple Day events, Potato Day, bikeability sessions and bike maintenance events, One Planet Sunday, The Green Fair, The Green Show on Frome FM, Frome’s Missing Link (which has now gone independent), the Pedal-Powered Cinema, the Warm Homes project, the Bee parade at the Carnival, and Frome Anti-Fracking.
“There are a number of active groups in Sustainable Frome that are looking for ways to help Frome meet the challenges of a low-carbon future. These groups are generally organised in a fairly informal way, and will be busy or quiet depending on who is active in the group and how much time they have.
“If people want to create their own group, or start a project, then we will support them in whatever way we can (if it is in line with our objects); it is not a plan co-ordinated from the centre.”
To celebrate the ten years, a shared meal has been organised on Thursday, 4th May, at Frome Town Hall from 6.45pm. All are welcome to attend the event, to hear stories about what the group has already done, as well as how the group could help the town in the years ahead.
All who attend are invited to bring a vegetarian dish for the shared meal.
“If there is something you are interested in and are struggling to make contact with others involved in it, then contact info@sustainablefrome.org.uk and we’ll do our best to help,” added Rachel.
