A TAXI driver in Frome is seeking support to ask Frome Town Council to look into altering the exit from the Cattle Market car park onto Bridge Street over fears it is unsafe.
Taxi driver, Chuko Itoje of Pro Cabs, is concerned that the junction exiting the main car park in the town centre is an ‘accident waiting to happen’.
He has approached both Somerset County Council and Frome Town Council, who state that if he can rally support behind his concerns, that they could look into holding a public meeting to discuss viable options to make the junction safer.
He has started a petition on Change.org to gather signatures that he can take to the councils.
Chuko said, “As a taxi driver working in Frome, exiting right on Bridge Street is a high risk due to not being able to see traffic coming up the hill unless you edge forward, halfway across the path of traffic coming up North Parade hill.
“I have seen many close hits with cars that have long front bonnets. It is an accident waiting to happen and I am sure that other drivers experience the same fear when either coming up the hill of North Parade or coming out of Bridge Street.
“The petition is for an alteration of the exit of Bridge Street for the safety of drivers exiting the road and traffic coming up the hill of North Parade.
“Both Frome Town Council and Somerset County Council have been informed of this safety hazard and are willing to look into the road being altered but I need your support before holding a public meeting for all to discuss solutions and suggestions. I have a suggestion for the alteration, which will be discussed in the public meeting once enough support has been gathered.
“I look forward to your support by signing the petition in making Frome roads safer for both locals and visitors.”
Once enough people sign the petition, Chuko is hoping that Frome Town Council will arrange the public meeting to discuss his idea and for residents to share their thoughts.
