The 2016 Frome Festival Annual General Meeting

The Frome Festival AGM will be held on Monday 29th February at 7.00pm at the Assembly Rooms, located at the rear of the Memorial Theatre, Christchurch Street West in Frome (BA11 1EB).

Everyone who is interested in the Festival is cordially invited to come along to hear, and put questions to, the Board of Trustees and Martin Dimery, the Festival’s creative director.

Anyone may speak, but only registered Festival Friends will be able to vote. It will be possible to join the Friends of Frome Festival on the evening.

The bar will be open from 6.45pm. Free car parking is available.

  • Residents try out new app to track plastic litter Residents spent a sunny Saturday testing an innovative free app designed to track and tackle plastic waste as part of the Wessex Citizen Science Showcase. The event began at RISE on Whittox Lane before attendees headed out for a riverside litter pick to put the new Wastebase app to the test. The app, developed by social enterprise Unwaste.io, shares information about single-use plastic waste, where it originates, and where it has ended up. “The team from Unwaste.io, the social enterprise behind the Wastebase app, was on hand at the event to demonstrate how it works by scanning barcodes from collected items to gather data on where most plastic waste originates,” explained Laura Smith, a spokesperson for Unwaste.io.   • Frome Medical Practice launches monthly health and sustainability radio show Frome Medical Practice has launched a new monthly radio show dedicated to supporting community health and sustainability. The show has been launched in collaboration with Green & Healthy Frome. Hosted by Charlotte Carson and Jeremy LeFevre, the show will bring together local health professionals, residents and environmental experts to share stories, insights and practical tips for healthier living, while also taking care of the planet. The first episode airs on 22nd April in celebration of Earth Day on Frome FM. Tune in to hear engaging conversations with local experts and inspiring community leaders as they share their top tips on how to live well while caring for the planet. Each episode will explore key themes such as active travel, mental health and the benefits of connecting to nature, showcasing local projects and the people driving them forward. The event, taking place on Saturday 10th May, is being organised by Frome Skatepark Project, a community group raising funds for a new skatepark in Frome. The day promises excitement and fun for the whole family, featuring best trick competitions and music. People of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in the skate jam from 1pm to 4pm, which welcomes all wheeled sports enthusiasts, including skateboarders, roller skaters, scooter riders and BMX bikers—whether you’re a seasoned pro or a complete beginner.   • Wesley Close residents’ concern over ‘life-changing’ parking plans Residents of Wesley Close have raised concerns about the potentially ‘life-changing’ impact of proposed parking restrictions along the road. Somerset Council is proposing to introduce double yellow lines on Wesley Close as part of wider changes to parking and waiting restrictions on over 30 roads in Frome and surrounding towns. These restrictions aim to stop waiting, loading, unloading and on-street parking. However, residents, business owners and local councillors have expressed concerns about how the restrictions could affect those living and working in the area.   • Edventure searches for a venue for alternative DIY shop Edventure Frome, a leader in community-led initiatives, is working on a new project to develop a DIY Materials Shop in Frome – and they need your help. The team is now inviting the community to suggest potential locations to trial the new venture. The shop aims to sell high-quality, surplus DIY materials to members of the public, turning potential waste, which often ends up in recycling centres, into valuable community resources. Over the past few weeks, Edventure has been supporting a team of adult learners working on the project as part of their Incubation Course, which teaches social enterprise skills using a learning-by doing approach. The course guides participants through the process of designing, building and piloting a real social enterprise that makes a positive local impact on the community.   • Iconic WH Smith name to disappear from Frome The WH Smith shop in Frome will soon be rebranded, with a new name taking over the familiar high street brand. Located in the town centre, the store will adopt the name ‘TG Jones’ as part of a wider change following the sale of WH Smith’s high street operations to Modella Capital, the owner of Hobbycraft. Founded in 1792, WH Smith has long been a staple of UK high streets. Despite the change, the store’s operations will continue as normal during the rebranding process, with Modella Capital assuring customers that it will be ‘business as usual’ throughout the transition.   • Presentation to give vital update from the West Bank A talk in Frome will raise awareness of the plight of people in Palestine. Mohammad Tamimi, founder & director of Hebron International Resources Network (HIRN) will be speaking in Frome as part of his UK tour. Organisers say, “Mohammad has worked with Palestinian communities facing the brunt of the Israeli occupation for more than 23 years. “HIRN provides support to many of the most threatened and marginalized Palestinian communities in the West Bank, bringing the compassion, practical help and encouragement needed to remain resilient.” Light refreshments available will be available and Zaytoun Fairtrade Palestinian products will be available to buy. The talk will take place at Trinity Hall on Trinity Street in Frome from 7pm to 9pm on Saturday 26th April. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to HIRN.   • Bring a tin to the gym – new food bank donation point at Frome PureGym Fair Frome officially opened a new gym last month, marking the start of a new permanent donation point for the food bank. Senior coordinator for Fair Frome, Lenka Grimes, cut the ribbon to officially open PureGym at Wessex Fields, on Friday 28th March. The site has now become a permanent donation point for the food bank. “We are really pleased to have another donation point in the town in order to increase food bank stocks,” explained Lenka. “We spent £8,000 last year on food bank items and we just can’t afford to do that anymore.” Fair Frome donation points are situated in Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl, Tesco Express, Co-op Fromefield, Co-op Badcox, Howden Insurance on Catherine Street, Coventry Building Society, Frome Wholefoods and the Cheese and Grain.
