The Frome Independent has everything you need this Christmas

THE Frome Independent is holding its final market of the year, on Sunday 4th December from 10am to 3pm, and organisers promise to “go all out.”

Not only will there be a selection of unique gifts but there will be two local choirs serenading people as they shop.

Organisers say, “It’s nearly upon us – the final edition of The Frome Independent this year, and we’re going all out, cramming in even more stalls than usual throughout Frome town centre, Cheap Street, Catherine Hill, Market Yard and Justice Lane!

“If you are looking for unique gifts for Christmas, look no further than our designer maker section. We have pretty much all bases covered, with designer-makers offering everything from jewellery, leather goods, outerwear and underwear for adults, games and outfits for children, to gifts for your home, pets and more – this cohort of artisans really are the very best in the South West.

“Right in the middle of town, The Market Place stage is the perfect place to hang out, listen to some local music and meet friends – we’ve also got not one but two local choirs roaming the market on Sunday 4th December – keep an eye on our social media channels for timings.

“In the Market Yard, the Flea will be bursting with vintage experts and purveyors of mid-century home-wares and clothing, curios and knick-knacks. Head to Homes & Gardens for beautiful locally-sourced fresh and dried blooms, Christmas wreaths, hand-built furniture and textiles.

“On the Village Green (outside the library) our resident vintage mobile disco, Donna Somerset, will be playing classic 7” hits throughout the day – grab a drink and hang out while the kids dance their socks off or get crafty-making with Morag at Sunday Art Club. Frome Skatepark Project will also be in attendance with skate-themed merchandise, with all proceeds going to their Skatepark fundraiser.

“If you’re in the mood for some local produce, pay a visit to Somerset Farmers’ Market around the Boyle Cross, or wander up Stony Street for cheeses, chocolates, smoked, fermented and pickled treats, local charcuterie and honey. Most traders will take advance orders for Christmas too, so why not have a chat and see if they can supply you with all you need for the big day.

“For street food lovers, we’ll have a range of cuisines traded by passionate local people throughout the market. From crumpets and wood-fired pizza in the Flea, locally made Sushi, burritos, Fritto Misto and more on Scott Road – plus mulled wine and cider on the Village Green – there really is something to satisfy all urges.

“With visitors full of festive cheer, December has become our biggest fundraising month – Fair Frome will be back to raise vital funds for their work supporting local people trying to bounce back from the difficulties of living with poverty. As well as running the Food and Furniture Banks, Fair Frome are working together with The Frome Christmas Get Together, to provide a free sit-down traditional Christmas meal on Christmas Day at Trinity Church Hall, The Cricket Club and The Key Centre. Please dig deep and give generously to this incredible charity!

“Frome’s marvellous independent shopkeepers and cafes will be opening their doors, so you can pay a visit to this friendly bunch, who will be more than happy to welcome you in from the cold.

“If you’re coming from afar, we’ve even got an extra Park & Ride service in operation, from our friends at Andros UK – check out the VISIT page on our website thefromeindependent.org.uk for more info.”

  • Community garden wins Frome in Bloom award

The new community garden on Milk Street has won the President’s Trophy in the 2025 Frome in Bloom awards for outstanding community effort.

The garden was renovated earlier this year by members of Trinity Community Group, Milk Street residents, pupils at Vallis School and residents of the Trinity area, working with Frome Town Council’s ranger team, Tree Officer Helen Viner and the Frome Town Council Communities team.

Flower beds, seating and wooden play structures have created a space for local residents to gather, for children to play in before and after school and improved the appearance of the whole area.

Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner said, “Milk Street Green was such a lovely project to work on – the community came together and achieved something that will keep bringing joy and bringing people together for years to come. We’re really proud of it, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped with the vision, the planting and now the ongoing maintenance of this brilliant space. Thank you, Frome in Bloom for recognising all of that hard work!”

  • Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra – with a modern twist

Shakespear’s tragedy Antony and Cleopatra is coming to the Merlin Theatre next month, brought to you – with a modern twist – by Shakespeare Live.

The story of the passionate love affair between two powerful rulers – Cleopatra , queen of Egypt, and Mark Antony, of Rome – is full of comedy and witty banter, yet it is also a history play wrapped round a tragic romance, examining the choices between the personal and the political.

This fast-paced version, adapted and directed by Jacky Crosher for Shakespeare Live, spins a new twist on this less-performed play. An ensemble cast unpick the plot and text using both modern and original language.

“A glorious, magical re-working of this wonderful play,” say the organisers.

The play is at Frome’s Merlin Theatre on Saturday 25th October at 8pm. For more details and tickets, visit merlintheatre.co.uk

Tickets for the event, which includes a Q&A and book signing, are free.

Chris Smaje is well known for his previous book A Small Farm Future, which laid out a compelling vision for a post-carbon, agrarian society. Following a career in sociology and anthropology at the University of Surrey and Goldsmiths College, he co-founded Vallis Veg, a small ecological farm near Frome. His work bridges academic insight and practical experience, advocating for local, low-impact food systems and community resilience.

  • Frome Birth Talk takes over Tiny Hearts Project

Frome Birth Talk has taken over the running of the Tiny Hearts Project, based at the town’s community space, The Good Heart.

Tiny Hearts hosts well-established free drop-in groups for ages 0 to five and their carers on Mondays and Thursdays. It also runs Tiny Rainbow Hearts, a group for LGBTQIA+ families to socialise with other parents and their children.

The announcement was made during a visit from the High Sherif of Somerset, Janet Montgomery, and Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset, Lucy Nelson, who joined a Tiny Hearts session on Thursday 14th August, to see the impact both The Good Heart and Frome Birth Talk are having in the area.

Thanks to a National Lottery grant of £20,000, Frome Birth Talk has been able to take on the administrative and financial needs for this well-loved group and enable its continuation for the community for at least the next two years. It is facilitated by Vicki Ross, who has joined Frome Birth Talk as Volunteer and Groups Coordinator and will provide much-needed continuity for the group and its regular attendees.

  • Somerset Council may ‘look long and hard’ at further cuts without government support

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

Somerset Council may have to “look long and hard” at making further cuts to local services if further central government support cannot be provided.

In order to set a balanced budget for the last two years, the council has been reliant on “exceptional financial support” from central government in the form of a capitalisation directive.

This directive allows the council to fund day-to-day spending from the sale of land, property and other assets – something which is not normally permitted.

The council is currently forecasting an overspend of just over £5.4m for the current financial year, with many of the proceeds of recent asset sales being funnelled into the next phase of its transformation programme.

  • An evening in tribute to Johnnie Walker

Frome favourites Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books and Raves from the Graves have teamed up to host an evening with Tiggy Walker, the beloved wife of the late Johnnie Walker.

The event coincides with the release of Tiggy Walker’s memoir, Both Sides Now, in which she shares the joys of their life together: from the soaring highs of Johnnie’s legendary Radio 2 days to navigating the frustration and strange intimacy of anticipatory grief.

Manager of Hunting Raven, Tina, said, “Fans of Johnnie Walker will delight in getting to know the man better. But this event is not just for those who loved him — it is for anyone who’s known the tangled, messy grace of caring, grieving and loving all the way to the final breath.”

Tiggy will be in conversation with Graham Jones of Clocktower Record Shop and will be taking questions from the audience.

The event will take place at The Assembly Rooms on Friday 3rd October at 7.30pm.
