IN what surely has to be one of the most fun places to be in Frome, The Merlin Theatre is also a champion of volunteers who, as director Claudia Pepler says ‘are absolutely vital to us.’.
Claudia said, “Without our team of troupers we simply would not be able to open or run safely. Offering just a few hours a month makes a huge difference here and, of course, it is a lot of fun for anyone who loves theatre, comedy, dance or film. You get to see shows for free, play a role in a treasured venue at the heart of Frome and of course, if you’re on-shift you can have a free ice cream too!
“The theatre’s greatest need at the moment is for a knowledgeable and experienced treasurer to join the board of directors, the previous incumbent having been in post for 17 years, plus some new members to join the front of house team. More than just a meet-and-greet, help-to-your-seat positions, these roles are required in the hour before a show, during a performance and just briefly after shows so it is a great way to volunteer without too much time commitment.
“A great addition for adding to a career CV for anyone aged 18 to 118 or for anyone used to heading up a smooth-running busy scene with a calm smile, the theatre welcomes you to get in touch.”
Naturally, volunteer positions are unpaid but as Claudia said, “You will be part of a close-knit team, providing exceptional customer service in a lively, vibrant venue, supporting the arts at a crucial time as we continue to re-build our audiences post-Covid. We, of course, provide support and training whilst you make new friends and, of course, help yourself to a free ice cream if you’re on shift!
“Now is certainly an exciting time to step up and join the Merlin with the theatre’s 2023 season about to start next week – kicking off with comedy from hilarious Man Down actor and Taskmaster winner Mike Wozniak, followed by Roustabout children’s theatre scheduled for February half-term, then the new-theatre writing brilliance of SHE from former Manchester Contact Theatre artistic director, Hampstead Theatre artistic director and Birmingham Rep. artistic associate director, Anthony Clarke.
“Embracing community as well as hosting professional work, the season will include Mary Poppins Jnr. from the talented students of Selwood Academy; the first ever amateur production of Home I’m Darling from the town’s longest running non-professional drama club and at least 12 other events including regular National Theatre Live screenings, more live-drama pieces and the Kindness Festival all in the next four months and all before scheduled events for the Frome Festival or planning for the summer outdoor amphitheatre shows.
“Once again, an experienced treasurer is sought to join the board as well several keen front-of-house staff, so if you’re a theatre-lover and would like to be considered for either post, please contact theatre co-ordinator, Kaz Bold, to set up an informal chat via, merlincoordinator@gmail.com”
