THE musical thriller ‘Sweeney Todd’ provided a fantastic start to a new era for the Frome Musical Theatre Company.
Formerly known as Frome Amateur Operatic Society (FAOS), the local theatre group launched the new name, new brand and new logo at their production last week.
Chairman Andrew Carpenter explained, “The production of Sweeney Todd represents a real milestone in the lifetime of our group for it is this show that heralds our new identity as the Frome Musical Theatre Company. After a long and proud tradition, as first the Frome Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society and more recently the Frome Amateur Operatic Society, members thought it was time for a change when they voted overwhelmingly in favour of the new name at our AGM back in June.
“The new name far better represents what we perform nowadays insomuch as we rarely perform ‘opera’ but rather ‘musical theatre’. And many people comment that although we are an amateur company, insomuch as we don’t get paid, our approach to productions is very ‘professional’ and therefore the word ‘amateur’ should not be included in our title.”
The group, which celebrated its centenary in 2006, performs five productions a year – a traditional musical in May, a youth production in August, a modern musical and a concert in October, and a traditional family pantomime just after Christmas.
