Town council leader looks back at year of ‘wonderful’ community effort

Leader of Frome Town Council, cllr Anne Hills, reviewed her year at the Annual Town Meeting,  praising the town for having come together to meet the challenges of the year.

“I am so proud of the way this town has pulled together over the past year,” said cllr Hills. “It’s been a challenging year, but my naturally positive attitude means I have to focus on just some of the really wonderful things that have happened in Frome over the last year.

“One thing is certain, our community has stepped up to the plate: our medical practises, our care homes, our schools, our shopworkers and all the other people in roles that have kept the town going, from those emptying the bins to those emptying bed pans.

“Active and In Touch, Fair Frome, our community drivers, and all our other amazing charities and of course, our staff have been right there with them

“Frome had over 300 volunteers who came forward to help – whether to shop for a shielding neighbour, collect prescriptions, take someone to a hospital appointment, volunteer with Fair Frome, or phone someone who would otherwise be isolated. And those are just the people we could count – throughout the town there were endless acts of community and kindness.

“Sharing cupboards have started to pop up around the town, as well as the Wild About Sharing boxes that the rangers have built, and the two community fridges that we have.

“We took our place in a role of community leadership and support.  As soon as the news of the pandemic, and an impending lockdown hit, our collective thoughts turned to how we would support the most vulnerable members of our community. Leaflets and banners encouraging us to ‘check in on your five nearest neighbours’ started to build neighbourhood networks that have been growing throughout the year.

“Our staff were able to adapt rapidly to the demands of the situation. Staff changed their role to delivering emergency food parcels.  An entire telephone hotline sprung up over night. Everyone took their turn on the rota, ensuring anxious residents and businesses were given the time and the support that they needed.

“In the summer, our rangers added a playful element to our parks mowing grass mazes in Rodden Meadow and the showfield. And there was chalk in Victoria Park to make social distancing measurements a bit more beautiful.

“People litter picked while out on their daily exercise, or joined in on the Hoe Down to keep the town tidy  And our events, our celebrations of community couldn’t happen in the way that we would choose them too:  we couldn’t celebrate Halloween, bonfire night or the Christmas Light the Night, in our usual way, but the Halloween Window Wanderland, followed by making Christmas lanterns for our windows, were lovely substitutes. The Dress up Friday Facebook group has been joyous.

“Our community, what can I say? We had a great base to start with. But it is fair to say that during this pandemic, we supported and enabled the scale up of the community feeling and energy we already had here.”

Following her speech at the Annual Town Meeting, cllr Hills went on to show a short video that was prepared for the Academy of Urbanists, in September last year, when they celebrated Frome as one of the previous winners of the ‘Great Town’ award.

  • Frome Birth Talk chosen for funding boost

A Frome charity has been selected for a match-funding opportunity to further its work in supporting people through pregnancy, birth, parenthood and baby loss.

As part of this year’s Small Charity Week from 22nd to 29th June, all donations made to Frome Birth Talk via the Big Give website up to £2,500 will be matched, meaning supporters can help the charity reach twice as many families.

Frome Birth Talk offers free and low-cost counselling to anyone who is pregnant, has had a baby or has experienced baby loss within the previous two years. Alongside counselling, the charity runs five weekly drop-in groups for parents and their babies and young children, creating safe, welcoming spaces for connection and support.

  • Health information events at Frome Medical Practice

Two health information events are being held at Frome Medical Practice this month, aimed at supporting patients on key health topics.

The first event, a Pelvic Health Talk, is offered as part of the Women’s Health Hub at the practice and takes place on Tuesday 23rd June from 6pm to 7pm.

Organisers say, “Many women experience symptoms of poor pelvic health in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patients are invited to come to the talk to learn more about common pelvic health issues, as well as ways to improve symptoms and support wellbeing. The session will be led by a pelvic health physiotherapist and aims to empower women to take control of their health.”

  • Friends cycle to Rome in once-in-a-lifetime charity adventure

A 1,300-mile journey from Frome to Rome is under way after two friends turned a casual pub idea into a six-week cycling challenge across three countries.

Frome resident Anton Grais set off with friend Joel Rooprai on 17th May and the duo will cycle for six weeks across three countries, crossing rural landscapes, busy cities and challenging mountain routes in the Alps.

They are aiming to raise £1,500, which will be split between Mind, the British Heart Foundation and the Royal British Legion.

The idea came following a ‘tipsy’ trip to the pub last year. They left their jobs – Anton worked in property and Joel in aerospace defence – to undertake the adventure.

  • Community investment tops £250,000 in Saxonvale share offer

More than a quarter of a million pounds has been raised through the Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer less than a week after it opened to the public.

Over 260 people have now invested over £256,000 in the campaign to bring Saxonvale, a 12-acre regeneration site in the centre of Frome, into community ownership.

The investment cam-paign allows people to buy community shares in Mayday Saxonvale Community Benefit Society to help fund a bid to purchase and regenerate the town centre site. The group says that if successful, Saxonvale would become one of the UK’s largest and most ambitious community-led regeneration projects.

The campaign is aiming to raise a minimum of £1.5 million from the community alongside £1.2 million of secured social impact lending from Resonance, creating a minimum £2.7 million funding package to support a bid for the site.
