  • Frome’s Climate Film Festival set to return this month Films inspired by the climate are set to engage audiences this month as Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns. The festival will take place over two dates – 18th and 25th May – showcasing submissions from over 100 countries. The films share powerful stories about climate change and the resourceful solutions being developed by the people most affected. Organiser Julia Wellard said, “The inspiring stories are told through animation, video, film and music – many of them short, but none lacking in impact.   • Friends to tackle Jurassic Coast walk for dementia charity A Frome business owner is preparing to take on a 26-mile walking challenge along the Jurassic Coast to raise funds for Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support Services. David Wye, owner of Domesticare in Keyford, will be joined by his friend Elaine Keene for the event, which begins in Weymouth on Saturday 17th May. The pair are raising money in support of the charity following the recent dementia diagnosis of a family member. The charity has been providing dedicated support for people living with dementia for over 30 years. This year’s challenge follows their successful completion of the Macmillan Cancer Support ‘Mighty Hike’ last year, where they walked 26 miles through the Monmouth Hills.   • Meet the free social running group bringing residents together – one pastry at a time! A free running group in Frome is celebrating its first anniversary after a year of helping locals get active, make friends and discover the town – one pastry at a time. Plod for Pastries, a free, no-pressure running group, was launched last May by two Frome locals Katie Geddes and Ben Wood, who were looking for local clubs to join and meet new people in a fun and active way. As keen runners, they were already running to cafes for coffee and pastries, and to pubs then decided to extend the invitation to others in the community. One year on and the group has grown in popularity with an increasing number of people joining to take part in the weekly 3km to 10km runs. The idea is that the group meet for a run then head to further socialise and eat or drink in one of Frome’s restaurants, cafes, bars. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Helping plants and wildlife in the climate chaos Greetings, this is Peter from the Wild Bunch. This March was the sunniest ever in southern England, with some record-breaking temperatures and long dry spells. Hence, wildfires are occurring in the moors while dry winter bracken and grass have not been replaced with less flammable new shoots. While these fires clearly have a devastating impact on both plants and animals, the underlying climate chaos is much more concerning. Most plants use two triggers to emerge from dormancy: day length and an accumulation of average temperature or number of days above a certain level. This means that even if there is a long warm spell, a plant won’t emerge unless day length says it’s the ‘right’ time. But extremes of unexpected temperatures can cause a plant to override the daylight trigger and emerge or flower anyway with two painful consequences. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link’s project officially reopens By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby with further reporting by Frome Times Phase two of Frome’s Missing Link has officially reopened after being resurfaced, following a successful fundraising campaign. The 1.3km path, linking the Colliers Way terminus to Elliots Lane in Hapsford, can be accessed from Buckland Road in Great Elm or via the Colliers Way. Originally laid in 2018, its rough surface was unsuitable for horses, bikes, scooters and wheelchairs. After raising £27,000 last autumn, the route received a £140,000 upgrade, improving access to National Cycle Network route 24. It was formally reopened at a well-attended event on Saturday 26th April, with the mayors of Frome and Radstock in attendance. The project aims to deliver a multi-user path from Welshmill Lane to the Colliers Way cycle path in Great Elm, creating an unbroken route between Frome and Radstock.   • Energy entrepreneur to speak in Frome Renowned energy entrepreneur Howard Johns will be speaking at Frome Town Hall this month giving advice on building a more sustainable future for Frome. The free talk will run on Tuesday 20th May, from 7pm to 9pm and is ideal for anyone interested in renewable energy and reducing energy bills. Howard said, “Why are your energy bills so high and what can you do about it? The current energy system is outdated, expensive and harmful to our wallets, our health, the planet and even global stability. “Every year, we pour thousands into companies that are fuelling the crisis. It’s time to flip the switch. “Join us to kick-start an energy transformation in Frome: where our homes generate, store and share clean energy.   • Licence granted for new Frome nightspot despite local objections By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby A new Frome nightspot can play live music and sell alcohol to its patrons despite concerns raised by neighbouring residents. Earthaus Property Ltd secured permission in May 2024 to turn four existing flats at 1 Saxonvale into an eight-bedroom hotel, which would overlook the Saxonvale regeneration site in the town centre. The Saxonvale Ltd has sought to open the ground floor and courtyard area as a café, bar and late night events venue, which could include playing live music and selling pizzas to local customers. Despite objections from local residents, Somerset Council has agreed to grant the Frome business a licence, meaning it could be up and running within the next few months.   • Climate adaptation event moves to Cheese and Grain An event focused on the impact of climate change and how communities can build resilience is moving to the Cheese and Grain on Tuesday 13th May due to high demand for tickets. Act to Adapt, organised by Frome Town Council, is the first in a series of events and is part of a project co-hosted with Somerset Wildlife Trust and funded by the Somerset Rivers Authority. Due to strong interest, the venue has been moved to the Cheese and Grain to allow more people to attend. Frome Town Council’s climate action lead, Matt Mellen, said, “It’s fantastic to see so much interest in the Act to Adapt event, with over 100 people already signed up. We’ve moved the meeting to the Cheese and Grain, so there’s plenty of room for even more people to join us." Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Free money coaching sessions to launch in Frome Free money coaching sessions are due to run this month offering support and advice for people managing their finances. The sessions, which are being run by Holy Trinity Church in partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), will provide expert financial advice in the local community over three weeks from Monday 12th May at 5pm at The Bridge Café on Selwood Road. “With the soaring cost of living over the last few years, we’ve seen how important it is that people know how to successfully manage their money, whatever their income,” explained Gary Lee, who is organising the new course. “It’s vital that we know how to balance what we have, save for emergencies and stay out of debt. “Our money coaching course is here to equip people in Frome to do that.
