NOT everyone can say that they love their job, but Christina Kaye fell in love as a building conservator straight away, particularly working at Wells Cathedral.
Christina, who has lived in Frome for over 20 years, studied fine art at university but always had an interest in ecclesiastical sculpture.
Christina said, “I contacted various church bodies about work and received a letter back from Wells Cathedral about an apprenticeship working on the west front of the cathedral.
“I fell in love with Wells Cathedral straight away and it remains a very special place to me. I love working on historic buildings and I feel very privileged to have worked on many incredible buildings, but Wells Cathedral is very special to me.”
Christina works with Sally Strachey Historic Conservation who work at Wells Cathedral. They have been repairing the North Quire Aisle walls and parapets which are situated in one of the most sheltered areas of the cathedral, thus retaining a high percentage of the early building fabric.
Historic buildings suffer the effects of weathering, especially exposed elements such as parapets, mullions and string courses and need regular monitoring to assess their stability and integrity.
