THE winners of the Young Open Art Exhibition 2013 were announced at Black Swan Arts recently, as part of an exhibition of almost 200 pieces of work by young artists.
12 winners were chosen by judges Pippa Goldfinger, the mayor of Frome, Celia Bennett, portrait artist and Jane Worrall, Black Swan Trustee.
The judges were asked to choose from three age categories, and a Highly Commended category had to be introduced, as the judges decided there were so many deserving artists.
The pupils of over 50 schools were represented from in and around Frome and a special mention for Oakfield Academy, Warminster Prep School and Paragon school, whose pupils submitted more than 40 pieces of work between them.
Each of the successful artists won an opportunity to work with professional artists; Connie will learn to blow glass; Rose, Sam, Ben and Tom are working with painters, Kofi wants to know about sculpture; the others will be making jewellery, creating an animation, film or website or working with textiles and wire.
Black Swan Arts are so grateful to the artists who are providing these unique prizes. Amanda Sheridan, the curator said, “This exhibition is a testament to the efforts of so many committed and enthusiastic people – primarily the talented children, their art teachers and parents. Of course our judges and the prize givers have been wonderful. And the often unsung heroes of the gallery are the volunteers who have been so helpful in putting on this fantastic exhibition and without whom the Black Swan would not exist.”
