Work begins on new police enquiry office

Work has now started to create a new police enquiry office at Frome Library – as reported in the last issue of Frome Times.

Due to open in early April, services at the new facility will be delivered in the same way as they were at the former police station front desk which closed in January 2015 due to low footfall.

Since then, Avon and Somerset Constabulary has been working with Somerset County Council to open the enquiry desk at the library. This will be a co-location rather than a shared service, meaning the public will speak to a uniformed member of police staff.

The facility will also be available for the neighbourhood policing team to use as a touchdown base while on patrol in the town.

Services available at the enquiry office will include:

Crime reporting • General policing enquiries • Road traffic collision reporting • Applications for firearms licences • Crime prevention advice • Lost and found property.

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am pleased that we will soon be able to offer a firm police base for Frome in a publicly accessible and well-used community venue. By working closely with our partners we are delivering value for money by reducing expensive and under-utilised police buildings while still maintaining a high level of public service to our communities.

“I would like to apologise to local people for any inconvenience the work may cause.”

Mendip Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Nicholson said, “We are delighted work has now commenced on the new enquiry office, and would like to thank the public for their patience during the planning stage. We look forward to working closely with our partners at the site to ensure that we provide the best possible policing service to the public.”
