Send for Nellie! – she can transform the lives of deaf people in homes and hospitals

Care homes and hospitals are failing residents and patients with hearing loss. That is the finding of a survey published recently by Wally Harbert, a retired director of Help the Aged and resident of Frome.

Voluntary organisations told him that many health and social care staff lack basic knowledge about hearing loss and the care of hearing aids.

Speaking today about his report, ‘When silence is no longer golden’, he said “Maintaining hearing aids in good condition is not rocket science. The essentials can be learned by sitting next to Nellie. It is not lack of money that is holding back services, but a lack of will.”

He is critical of guidance by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and wants every care home and hospital to have staff or volunteers available to clean and re-tube faulty aids.

He adds, “Frail elderly people are among the most socially isolated people in society. Better staff training is essential and community activists can improve services at little cost, by training cadres of volunteers to clean and re-tube hearing aids.”

  • Pick & Mix: Frome’s favourite variety night returns!

After a hugely enjoyable debut show in the summer, another evening of variety is coming up at The Merlin with a fresh, and eclectic new line-up.

It’s brought to you by the award-winning New Old Friends Theatre Company with the evening being hosted by Fearg.

“We have secured a top-quality bill headlined by legendary comedy improv company, Instant Wit!” said Fearg. “Featuring among the performers, Jon Monie, so beloved of Bath pantomime audiences, our fast-paced sketches, songs and gags are completely improvised and directed by the audience – addictive, hilarious, and always unique.

“Speaking of hilarious songs, Frome’s own master of musical mischief, Tom Veck, is making an appearance. Tom’s witty ditties (often inspired by the confessions of strangers) have earned him five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe and a packed solo show at this year’s Frome Festival. A real local favourite and not one to miss."

  • Live performance is very much alive this autumn in Frome!

As the Merlin Theatre continues to celebrate its 50th year, this popular 240-seat theatre arts venue is bucking the national trend with its new season’s programme offering even more live performances than ever.

In addition to hosting now the only opportunity in the UK to see Beatles-Hall-of-Famer Mark McGann and his brother, ex-Doctor Who actor Paul McGann, performing their unique journey into the heart of Liverpool’s legendary music scene, the theatre is also bringing several new plays, cabaret entertainment, stand-up comedy and an exciting professional ‘first ever’ moment to the stage this Autumn/Winter season.

Playwright and performer Marina Sossi will premiere her bold, witty new play, ‘Let Love Kill You’ on 23rd September. With her heart firmly in Frome, Marina was born in the town, educated at Frome college, performed as a young person in The Merlin and then spent several years working in London and America, before returning to live again in Frome last year.

  • Local author records audiobook in the Cheese and Grain studio

A local author has recorded his new audiobook at the Bert Jansch Studio at the Cheese and Grain.

Chris Smaje recorded his book ‘Finding Lights in a Dark Age: Sharing Land, Work & Craft’ with the help of the studio’s engineer, Milo.

“It was the perfect setting and a nice place to work,” said Chris, whose book explores whether we can run our economy in a way that is kinder to both people and the environment. He says the only alternatives are not free markets on one hand and state control on the other: other ways of doing things are possible.
