A FROME resident who has been a member of the Frome and District Friendship Club and Day Centre for 20 years is celebrating his 99th birthday; he says his tip for a long life is to ‘enjoy food and everything in moderation!’
John Oakey turns 99 years old on Tuesday 27th February and sings the praises of the club which is based in the Assembly Rooms behind the Memorial Theatre.
“I really enjoy the company and the food at the friendship club,” says John. “My favourite food is the old-fashioned stuff and I enjoy the company of everyone here; they’re all really great people. There’s a lot going on and I recommend this club to everyone. My message to people in Frome is to be happy and come and join us!”
A highlight of his life, John said, was when he joined the navy aged 18 years old. “I served on the HSM Adamant in World War II in 1943,” explains John.
The Frome and District Friendship Club and Day Centre runs every Monday and Thursday at the Assembly Rooms; it runs on a Monday from 11am to 3.30pm and then on a Thursday from 11am to 1.30pm.
Those over 55 years old can join for £20 per year. The club offers a two-course lunch from Keren’s Comfort Kitchen, day trips, entertainment and friendship.
