FROME Canoe Club is this year celebrating its 40th year on the water and will be holding a special event next Saturday to mark the milestone.
The club, founded in 1976 by Bob Hinton and Graham Warnecke, started as a small group of keen paddlers who went in search of white water and exciting rivers.
Now, the club is going strong after 40 years and will be holding a special event next Saturday, 3rd September, to celebrate its rich history. Members past and present are invited to join at the clubhouse in Market Yard.
People are invited to turn up throughout the day, and there will be activities including a cardboard challenge, a polo game, a buffet between 1pm and 2.30pm, speeches at 4pm, then a barbecue leading into an evening event.
All through the day will be displays of the club’s history and photos of past members.
Club secretary Pam Dixon said, “Over very many years of existence, the club has seen hard times with accommodation problems and low numbers, but in 2007 the club got a massive boost when the new clubhouse was built right in the centre of town.
“This represented years of fundraising activities and saving, but the hard work paid off, so much so that we now enjoy a flourishing membership with a good programme of activities. Our provision for young people is recognised at a national level.
“To celebrate our 40th birthday we are having an event on Saturday 3rd September with a day of looking back over our history, as well as staging some exciting paddling activities.
“We would dearly like to reach out to all past members to invite them to the event. If you have had any connection with the club over its many years of existence and you would like to help us celebrate our 40th anniversary, we would love to hear from you!”
