ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners took to the streets of Frome last week as protests took place worldwide in the lead up to UN climate talks in Paris.
A protest march through Frome was held on Saturday 28th November, just days before the COP21 talks were set to begin in France. Beginning at the Cheese and Grain, the march made its way through the town via Westway, Catherine Hill and Bath Hill.
Green Party campaigner and 2015 parliamentary candidate for Somerton and Frome, Theo Simon took part in the protest.
Theo told Frome Times, “The march was fantastically loud and vibrant and I was really impressed with the turnout. We held the protest a day earlier so people could attend the big one in Bristol on Sunday.
“I think there are a lot of people in the Somerton and Frome constituency who have an interest in environmental issues, but sometimes people don’t get involved because they don’t feel confident that anything will get done.
“Efforts to bring renewable energy into the area are losing the support of Government, and jobs are being lost in the sector; we need to be going in the other direction.
“It’s important to support renewable energy intiatives such as FRECo, but we can’t afford to do it alone. The best thing people can do is to lobby town, district and county councillors and MPs to support and encourage the development of renewable energy projects.”
Theo spoke at climate marches in Frome and Bristol over the course of the last weekend in November.
The COP21 climate talks began on Monday 30th November and have seen over 150 world leaders discuss taking action to reduce global carbon emissions.
