RSPB Somerset Big Garden Birdwatch – “Together, let’s make it count”

RSPB Somerset Big Garden Birdwatch – “Together, let’s make it count”

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Almost 600,000 people took part in across the UK in 2025, counting more than nine million birds of over 80 species. In Somerset just over 13,300 residents joined in the count and the RSPB hope even more residents will sign up for 2026.

The survey provides a valuable snapshot of how our most common garden birds are faring and taking part is one positive way to take action for birds and nature.

This year’s event takes place on 23rd, 24th and 25th January. People in Somerset are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.

In Somerset the top three birds recorded last year were: House Sparrow, Blue Tit and Starling.

Citizen science

The Birdwatch, which started in 1979, has become the UK’s biggest citizen science wildlife survey. Over that time, more than 200 million birds have been counted and over 12.6 million hours spent watching and counting garden birds.

Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s Chief Executive, said: “By taking part in the Birdwatch, you and hundreds of thousands of other nature lovers across the UK, are helping us understand how garden birds are doing.

“Birds and wildlife are struggling right now. Every observation counts, even if you see nothing at all. Whether you live in a city or the countryside, anyone, anywhere, can take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch – even if you don’t have a garden! A park, balcony, allotment or window box will do. Simply spend an hour and count the birds you see. It’s good for wildlife and evidence shows it’s good for our own wellbeing.”

Winners and losers

Over its four decades, Big Garden Birdwatch has highlighted the winners and losers in the garden bird world. 2025 UK-wide results revealed that House Sparrow was still ranked number one for the 22nd year in a row. However, numbers were down 11% compared to 2024. Average House Sparrow counts were the lowest since 1998 and down 64% compared to the first BGBW in 1979.

Starlings dropped out of UK’s top three garden birds and average Woodpigeon counts increased across the UK, largely mirroring the national trend in breeding population.

Beccy added: “Even on the greyest winter day, garden birds bring a welcome dose of nature into our everyday lives. Take a moment to pause, to listen, to notice. We need nature, and nature needs us. By joining the Big Garden Birdwatch you’re doing something positive for birds and nature. Because when we act for nature together, we can do so much more.”

Just one hour

To take part in Somerset’s Big Garden Birdwatch 2026, watch the birds on your balcony, in your garden or in your local green space for one hour at some point over the three days.

To register and receive your FREE Big Garden Birdwatch guide, which includes a bird identification chart, top tips for your Birdwatch, RSPB shop offer, plus advice on how to help you attract wildlife to your garden, text BIRD to 82727, or you can choose a free digital guide  (which helps the RSPB spend more on nature by reducing costs) by visiting: www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

  • New volunteering hub already helping people get involved in Frome

A new volunteering drop-in at The Good Heart is already helping people across Frome find ways to get involved in their community, just weeks after launching.

Get Involved Frome, a pilot project from Spark Somerset’s Volunteering for Health initiative, is supporting people to find volunteering opportunities that match their interests, skills and availability through the Spark a Change website.

The weekly Friday drop-in has welcomed people of all ages, including young people looking to gain work experience and strengthen their CVs. Many visitors have been keen to find opportunities outdoors, supporting nature and wildlife projects, while others have been looking for roles in community cafés and local charities.

  • Frome teen wins pickleball silver after injury comeback

A teenager from Frome has won a silver medal at a national pickleball championship just months after returning to the sport following a serious arm injury.

Kai Santano, 15, competed in the Young Persons Championships at Courtside in Stourbridge in June, taking second place in the mixed-age doubles category alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea.

The result comes only four months after Kai returned to play following surgery for a double break to his left arm and a partial wrist dislocation, sustained while skateboarding in Victoria Park just one week before he was due to compete in the National Championships.

His mum Laurie said, “He absolutely destroyed his arm and was in a full cast from October until December. He wasn’t allowed to do any contact sports until 1st February. He’s done really well to get back into it.”

  • Mark of excellence awarded to Frome green spaces

An international mark of excellence for parks and green spaces has been awarded to Frome’s Victoria Park and Mary Baily Playing Field.

The Green Flag Award was presented after judges visited in April, who explored the wide range of activities, facilities and community projects that take place across the parks and how they are managed by Frome Town Council.

Assessors praised the parks’ welcoming atmosphere, strong community involvement and features such as the toddler play area, community bowls club, murals, a carved bench created from a heritage tree felled in 2025 due to a fungal infection and the community cafe.

  • Donate shoes for pancreatic cancer awareness art installation

Residents are being asked to donate used adult shoes or trainers for an art installation at Frome Medical Practice to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and the need for earlier diagnosis.

Local artist Caroline Rudge is leading the installation, titled ‘800 missed steps each month’, which will feature 800 shoes representing the number of people who die from pancreatic cancer each month.

The installation will be finished in time for World Pancreatic Cancer Day in November, however, the community is being encouraged to donate ‘worn out’ adult shoes or trainers by 31st July.

  • Frome canoeist finishes 16th at Junior World Championships

Frome canoeist Jas Wilde competed on the world stage at last week’s Junior World Championships in Krakow, Poland, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The 18-year-old finished 16th in the women’s canoe semi-final after a challenging run on a demanding course.

“I suppose 16th in the world isn’t bad!” said Jas, who trains on the River Frome with Frome Canoe Club. “It’s really tough racing canoe slalom; we don’t get a practice on the course which is set, so we have to plan how we are going to negotiate the gates and the whitewater in the fastest possible time.”
