A NEW charity shop has opened on Cheap Street to support the work of local organisation SOS Africa.
The SOS Africa charity shop opened last month and is the latest development in the charity’s work to help provide education to underprivileged African children.
Frome man Matt Crowcombe founded the charity in 2003, when he was just 18.
Matt said, “We’re very pleased with how opening this shop has gone – we’ve already had a lot of donations and the support from local people has been great. On the opening day alone we managed to raise enough funds to pay for a year’s education for an SOS Africa child.
“We’re Frome people so we’re very proud to be able to bring the charity here, and the high street is always busy so it’s a good place to be.
“Having this second shop – there is another in Shepton Mallet – means we can hope to raise more money and help more children in the coming year.
“We are looking for more volunteers so if anyone is interested in getting involved, please pop down to the shop and speak to us.”
SOS Africa provides education by sponsoring underprivileged children’s schooling in order to break them out of the cycle of poverty.
The charity also recently organised a fundraising ‘Nominate An Inmate’ lock-in event at Shepton Mallet Prison which involved a large number of Frome residents including Gavin Eddy from Forward Space, Elmer Barrat from Frome Wholefoods and local MP David Warburton.
