Frome-born award-winning sitcom- writer returns to the Merlin Theatre

James Cary, co-writer of Miranda (BBC1), Bluestone 42 (BBC3) and Another Case of Milton Jones (BBC Radio 4) is returning to his home town of Frome with his latest project, a play called The God Particle, a romantic comedy about science and religion.

A quantum physicist and a vicar walk into a bar. Joining forces to solve a perplexing mystery, they discover the real meaning of faith, knowledge, love and the importance of keeping an open mind. It’s deep, smart and very funny.

The play is at The Merlin Theatre at 7.45pm on Thursday 26th May. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 465949

James has been touring the UK with the play along with the cast, Anna Newcome as Bex and Joshua Leese as Gilbert.

The God Particle is a 75-minute one-act play featuring Rev Dr Gilbert Romans, the new local vicar, and Dr Bex Kenworthy from the Institute of Advanced Quantum Physics. Their meeting produces a big-bang-chemical-reaction of entirely the wrong kind, but strange goings on in the village of Threepiggs force them to work together and Mind their common ground.

In a heart-warming, laugh-out-loud way, The God Particle takes science and religion seriously, with each challenging the other. The play explores the purpose and practice of both, and how they can come together. It is suitable for everyone, and particularly aimed at those aged 13 and upwards. Amongst others, it will appeal to watchers of Dr Who, The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy, Rev and The Vicar of Dibley.

James Cary’s work includes two series of the BBC’s hit sitcom Miranda and episodes of My Hero and My Family. For the radio his credits include three series of Hut 33 and four series of award-winning Think the Unthinkable starring Marcus Brigstocke and David Mitchell. He has also written four series of Another Case of Milton Jones with Mock the Week’s Milton Jones. His sitcom for BBC3, Bluestone 42, about a bomb disposal unit in Afghanistan ran on BBC3 from 2013-15.

James also holds a degree in Theology from the University of Durham and is a member of the House of Laity for The General Synod of The Church of England.

This year’s ride raised money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research into motor neurone disease (MND) and supports people affected by the condition. MND is a rare, progressive disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
