The Frome Society’s Winter programme of fortnightly Saturday afternoon talks continues on Saturday 19th October with a talk by Frome resident, Julian Hight, about the Ancient Trees of Selwood Forest, their history, legacy and lore.
Julian trained as a graphic designer and musician and has spent most of his life working in publishing. His long-held interest in trees has given him reason to travel widely in pursuit of his research and he has written several books on the subject, which will be available to buy. He is an active member of the Woodland Trust and chair of the Wessex Ancient Tree Forum.
According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the area we call Selwood Forest stretched from north of Frome down to Shaftesbury and from Bruton to Warminster. Julian will tell the history of the forest through some of its majestic ancient trees, using archive and contemporary photography, local stories and specially recorded music and video.
Frome Society’s lectures take place in the Assembly Rooms at the rear of Frome Memorial Theatre (BA11 1EB) starting at 2.30pm. Visitors are welcome, but are asked to pay an entry fee of £5.00.
