Local school gets award for commitment to creativity

A local school has been awarded a Silver Artsmark for its outstanding commitment to creativity, following their second Summer Arts Exhibition at the Silk Mill. 

Berkley Church of England First School was awarded the accolade after its exhibition, which was inspired by the National Gallery’s Take One Picture programme for primary schools. 

Each year, the National Gallery chooses a picture from their collection to focus on. Berkley School’s Take One Picture inspiration was Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, ‘Wheatfield and Cypresses.’   

Each class created their own version of the painting using different skills and techniques, including collage, charcoal, soft pastel and pen. 

“The show was a fantastic success and well attended by the friends and family of Berkley school,” says the school’s arts lead, Ms Jenny Collins. 

Frome’s mayor, Cllr Andy Jones, officially opened the exhibition. “He was particularly impressed with the quality of the artwork and professionalism of the exhibition,” explained Rachael. “The children were really excited to see their artwork and couldn’t wait to share their creative success with their family and friends.  

“Everyone was thrilled by the exhibition. The atmosphere was fantastic and there was a real positive buzz and excitement to the evening. we are all very proud of the children’s amazing work!” 

The school has continued to boost the children’s creativity and learning by purchasing new books for the pupils, following a generous donation of £300 by Frome Town Rotary.
