FROME Selwood Horticulture Society (FSHS) have recently joined forces with the students at Selwood Academy to plant a tree to join The Queen’s Green Canopy.
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invited everyone across the UK to plant trees.
A spokesperson for the Society said, “There would seem to be no finer way to commemorate the Queen’s long life than by planting a tree, where the next generation can appreciate all that the Queen’s Green Canopy had intended, of creating a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of the Queen’s service and the legacy she has built. This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planted bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.”
President of the long-established FSHS, Victoria Turner, and other members of the Society planted the tree with students, Samuel and Delilah, at Selwood Academy in June, and despite the drought that followed, the Amelanchier lamarckii is doing well. Also known as a June Berry, it offers year-round interest with delicate, star-shaped, white flowers in spring, young bronze leaves maturing to dark green, edible, purple-black berries in June and stunning autumn leaf colour.
Selwood School was already working on a Year 5 Legacy Garden Project, and the FSHS thanks students, Samuel and Delilah, head teacher Daniel Jeffries, deputy head David Finlay, and teacher Jamie Prouse who assisted on the day.
