Young innovators to represent UK and Ireland in Global STEM competition

A group of Year 7 pupils from Oakfield Academy’s STEM club has been selected to represent the UK and Ireland in the TCS Go Innovate Together (GoIT) Global Innovator of the Year Competition 2024/25.

The pupils will showcase their new app idea, ‘Somershare,’ which connects teachers and other professionals who work in Frome but live outside the town, enabling them to carshare into work.

The students carried out market research, created a website and a basic app and filmed a five-minute advert to showcase the app which aims to improve sustainability in Somerset through car sharing.

They will now be judged against schools and individuals from America, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

Science teacher at Oakfield Academy Curtis Shaddick said, “The submitted entries are judged by a panel and the winning teams win mentorship opportunities, speaking engagements, support developing their concept, medals and trophies and global recognition for their design.”

The competition encourages young innovators from across Somerset to create a solution to improve sustainability in transport in their local area. Students aged 6 to 17 years in each of TCS’ eight global geographies are invited to submit their ideas for digital innovations that can make the world a ‘better place.’

“I entered the team consisting of Mila Peet, Sofia Peet, Annabeth Apps, Tyler Amphlett and Charlie Tolcher-Jones back in May last year, when they were then in Year 6, into the Somerscience GoIT Steps into STEM competition. I had previously entered a team into the inaugural 2023 competition, which we came second in,” explained Curtis.

“This year, the students’ idea of Somershare was selected as one of the top digital innovations and innovators from all 42 participating countries from eight geographic regions.

“This is such a phenomenal achievement by the students, who are thrilled and excited to take part in the competition.”

One of the students, Mila, said, “This is a dream come true to compete in, and possibly win a global STEM competition.”

  • Art gallery opens guest artist space

A guest artist space has opened at the Shine Frome Arts Collective gallery in Rise on Whittox Lane.

  • Community investment tops £250,000 in Saxonvale share offer

More than a quarter of a million pounds has been raised through the Mayday Saxonvale Community Share Offer less than a week after it opened to the public.

Over 260 people have now invested over £256,000 in the campaign to bring Saxonvale, a 12-acre regeneration site in the centre of Frome, into community ownership.

The investment cam-paign allows people to buy community shares in Mayday Saxonvale Community Benefit Society to help fund a bid to purchase and regenerate the town centre site. The group says that if successful, Saxonvale would become one of the UK’s largest and most ambitious community-led regeneration projects.

The campaign is aiming to raise a minimum of £1.5 million from the community alongside £1.2 million of secured social impact lending from Resonance, creating a minimum £2.7 million funding package to support a bid for the site.

  • New hub combines DIY store and Share Shop

Two community projects focused on saving money, reducing waste and sharing resources are coming together in Frome with the opening of a new DIY store and the return of the Share Shop.

Both initiatives are being run by local non-profit organisation Edventure and will operate from The Welsh Mill on Park Hill Drive. The new DIY and building materials store, Fromebase, is now open, while Share Frome is preparing to reopen at the site after leaving its previous premises last year.

Store manager Nicky Bragg said, “At a time when rising living costs are forcing many households to think differently about how they spend their money, Fromebase offers a practical solution for anyone looking to improve their home and help the planet without compromising on quality.

“We want people to understand that surplus doesn’t mean poor quality. The store is full of useful, high-quality materials that deserve to be used. We want DIY to feel more affordable, less intimidating and more resourceful.”
