New museum exhibit explores history of the Trinity area

Frome Museum has re-opened for the 2025 season with refreshed galleries and a new two-part exhibition about the town’s Trinity Area. 

The Trinity Area was backdrop to the ‘Great Clearance’, a 1960s enforced demolition of swathes of historic properties that were considered at the time no more than worthless slums. Trinity, Part 1: The Great Clearance, 1962-1968 opens at Frome Museum, 1 North Parade, on Tuesday 11th March. Entry is free.

Later this year, the museum will launch an exhibit on the ‘The Trinity Campaign,’ which saw the Frome community resist the clearances from the 1970s onwards. The exhibitions will shed light on a pivotal moment in the town’s social and civic history, illustrating how these events shaped Frome’s development and its sense of independent community.

Michael Maggs, chair of the board of trustees at Frome Museum, said, “Our dedicated volunteers have been hard at work over the winter, revitalising the galleries, improving displays and interpretation. The chemist’s shop, previously visible only through a window, is now open for visitors to step inside and explore newly displayed and illuminated exhibits up close. Our newly formed Children’s Working Group has also been busy making the museum more engaging for our younger visitors with a new dressing-up area, fun quizzes and trails.”

Frome Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm, plus on Independent Market Sundays. Every Thursday offers late afternoon opening, when the museum remains open until 5pm. For more information, visit https://frome-museum.org.
