Lazer Storm celebrates first year of action-packed fun

A local Lazer Storm arena is celebrating its first birthday, marking a year of action-packed entertainment for families, children and adults across the area.

Lazer Storm at Boomerang in Melksham offers a live-action laser tag experience inside a purpose-built air-conditioned arena featuring lighting effects, obstacles, hiding places and mission-based gameplay.

Designed for players aged six and above, participants are equipped with electronic phasers and sensors, scoring points by tagging opponents either individually or as part of a team.

“It’s the ultimate lazer tag experience and it’s been enjoyed by all ages from 6 to 76!” said Billie Cooke from Boomerang. “It’s action-packed and combines fun, teamwork, strategy and excitement.

“Over the past year we have seen countless birthday celebrations, family challenges, afterschool sessions and school holiday adventures take place within the arena. We have watched children grow in confidence, friends work together as teams and families create memories that last long after the game has finished.

“Kids aged 6 to 11 are in for an adrenaline-pumping adventure, while if you’ve got bored teens with nothing to do, we’ve got the perfect solution!

“You can book a casual session featuring two action-packed games or for an unforgettable party, our epic Battle Zone is ready for action.

“And adults are welcome to. You can join in with the kids or enjoy an epic all-adult party with a licensed bar, your own private area, and a night full of competitive, action-packed fun. It’s the ultimate way to let loose!”

Boomerang says new combination packages are also set to be introduced in the near future, adding further options for visitors.

Anyone interested in booking or finding out more can contact the team on 01225 702000 or visit https://boomerangplay.co.uk/.

  • Photo exhibition showcases Frome Festival over the years

A photography exhibition marking Frome Festival’s 25th anniversary will be on display in the town from 3rd July.

The collection features images of events held over the years and enjoyed by local people. The photographs will be displayed at Cafe La Strada on Cheap Street and Projects Cafe on The Bridge.

Co-chair of Frome Festival, Lockhart Murdoch, said, “Did you appear in a production of Wizard of Oz at Frome Festival in 2014? Did you sing in the Oakfield Choir? Did you attend food feasts or outdoor events? Were you in a fashion show? Maybe you or friends or family feature in photographs from previous festivals over the last 25 years. Come along and have a look. We hope these images will bring back fond memories.

  • Local canoeist to compete at Junior World Championships

A member of Frome Canoe Club is competing this week at the Canoe Slalom Junior World Championships in Krakow, Poland.

Jas Wilde, 18, is competing in both canoe and kayak at the event, which runs from 30th June to 5th July.

She trains on the River Frome, a far cry from the artificial whitewater courses used at international level.

Last year she took part in the championships, winning a silver medal in the women’s team event. This year she is aiming for an individual medal.

Jas said, “Lots of my peers are able to train on whitewater throughout the week, however I use my training in Frome and in the gym to give me the edge over other competitors. I know that I am fitter and stronger than them thanks to my training on the flat water.”

This year’s Frome Festival is set to begin, marking its 25th anniversary with a stellar line-up of arts, culture and community events.

  • New mothers’ singing group to launch in Frome

A new weekly singing group designed specifically for mothers is launching in Frome this July, offering a space for women to connect, sing and support their wellbeing.

Led by local coach, speaker and singing facilitator Georgina Jones, Singing Mamas Frome is part of a national charity that uses singing to support maternal wellbeing and reduce isolation.

The sessions are open to all mothers, whether they consider themselves singers or not. Babies and young children are also welcome.

“Many mums spend their days caring for everyone else and rarely get an hour that’s just for them,” said Georgina. “Singing has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood and help us feel more connected. These sessions are about joy, connection and taking a breath in the middle of busy family life.”

  • Music helps Frome woman with rare brain condition

A Frome woman born with a rare brain condition says music has played a vital role in her recovery and day-to-day life.

Maya Sherriff, 21, was born with vein of Galen malformation (VGM), a rare vascular abnormality where arteries in the brain connect directly to veins, bypassing the normal capillary network.

From the age of four weeks old, she has undergone eight brain operations and major surgery through her skull to drain fluid, with doctors predicting she would be ‘profoundly’ disabled and blind.

However, Maya has defied those early predictions. She lives with physical and emotional challenges including chronic fatigue, issues with blood flow and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but has credited music with helping her cope, build skills and focus on her wellbeing.

  • Young people’s grants programme ends with celebration

Young members of a new grant-making panel have celebrated the first round of grants and met some of the organisations that received funding.

Members of Young Opinions Unite (YOU), a new grant-making panel formed by Frome Town Council in partnership with local young people, gathered at the Assembly Rooms on Friday 5th June.

The event featured presentations from organisations including Purple Elephant, which received money to extend their popular ‘Tea and Toasties’ sessions for teenagers; Youth Production Network for Frome Pride; Focus Frome, whose grant supports a young people’s drop-in led by counsellors; Rainbow Flow for young people’s workshops; and Vallis Farm for their nature-based youth club. The event was also attended by panel members’ friends and family, councillors from Frome Town Council’s Grants Committee and staff.

  • Mayors Column

I would like to start my first Frome Times column by thanking all of you who congratulated me, whether in person or online, on becoming Mayor of Frome.

It seems my last attempt at this role in 2019 has stayed in some people’s memories and I promise to try and make an even better job of it this year.

In May every year, the Frome Town Council meeting selects the mayor and members of its committees and begins the council’s year of work and events. Some are traditional, such as Remembrance Sunday and Frome Carnival, while others are newer, such as the Pride celebrations. The first job of the new mayor is always to attend the blessing of St Aldhelm’s Spring, at the top of King Street. This is the source of the water that flows from under St John’s and down the leat in Cheap Street. It reminds us that we can trace the creation of our town to 685 AD, when St Aldhelm founded his church and the Frome we know started to grow around it.

  • Frome Partner Towns Column – Discover Pieve di Soligo

Welcome to the third in a series of articles introducing Frome’s four partner towns, formerly known as twin towns.

These partnerships offer opportunities to share sport, art, culture and more and make lifelong friends. This week it’s the turn of our newest partner, Pieve di Soligo in northern Italy.

Pieve di Soligo became the fifth town to join our partnership in June 2025, along with Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, France; Murrhardt, Germany and Rabka Zdrój, Poland.

The administration of Murrhardt made the initial link and invited a delegation from Pieve di Soligo to Murrhardt to discuss the new partnership. The formal accord was signed in Pieve di Soligo on 2nd June 2025.

Pieve di Soligo is in the Veneto Region in northern Italy, about one hour’s car journey north of Venice. It has around 12,000 inhabitants.
