Halloween drone show raises £12,000 for Frome skatepark

Thousands of people gathered in Frome for a spectacular Halloween drone show, which raised more than £12,000 for a new skatepark.

The free event, organised by Frome Town Council, took place at the Old Showfield on Thursday 29th October and featured a display by Britain’s Got Talent runners-up Celestial.

A fleet of 750 illuminated drones created a series of Halloween-themed images in the sky, while visitors also enjoyed fairground rides, face painting, food and drink stalls and entertainment from local groups.

The show continued Celestial’s tradition of bringing innovative aerial storytelling to Frome, following previous community displays that have become much-loved local events.

The event included fundraising stalls and merchandise from Frome Skatepark Project, which is raising money for a new facility planned for Mary Baily Playing Fields.

Volunteers from Frome Town Rotary, Rotary Club of Frome, Selwood Rotary and Frome Lions Club helped set up the event and collect donations alongside the skatepark project.

Mayor of Frome Mark Dorrington said, “What an incredible evening for Frome. Raising more than £10,000 for the Frome Skatepark Project is a fantastic achievement and I’d like to thank everyone who attended, donated, volunteered or helped make the event possible. Special thanks must go to Celestial for once again putting on an unforgettable show for the community.”

JP, director and head of production at Celestial, said the company had a strong connection with Frome, where it is based just outside the town and many of its team live.

He said, “Frome has always been a special place for Celestial. We have a long-standing relationship with the town, we’re based just outside it, and many of our team live locally, so it means a great deal to be back performing for our community. The people of Frome supported us hugely during our time on Britain’s Got Talent, voting for us in such large numbers, and we won’t forget that support. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to give something back while supporting such a worthwhile cause.”

Donations towards the skatepark can still be made by texting DRONE to 70580, at a cost of £5 per text.

More information about the project is available at fromeskateparkproject.com.

  • Somerset’s Local Plan moves forward

The first consultation in the process that will lead to Somerset’s new Local Plan has been completed with responses now being analysed.

The Local Plan Scoping Consultation enabled people to have their say on how Somerset could change in future and marked the first stage in the development of the Local Plan.

It will help guide where and how change happens across towns, villages and the countryside over the next 20 years but was not a consultation on specific sites.
