Humans of Frome: Tegan Rush by Ciara Nolan

Tegan Rush by Ciara Nolan

SEVENTEEN year old Tegan Rush is a photographer.  She has earned her photography chops the hard way – grit, determination, a lot of nerve, honing of her skill through practice, a little bit of luck and that magic ingredient ‘hard work’.

Over the past few years she has acted as assistant to established professional photographers, she has led shoots of her own for magazines and has photographed London Fashion Week for many online blogs and designers.  Bearing in mind she is currently studying for her A-levels, this is quite something.

Tegan was given her first camera when she was five years old.  It was a simple point and shoot, but she used it often enough and to such effect that her parents were willing to invest in a proper DSLR (as a joint present with her brother) when she was just 12 years old.

Tegan’s parents are engineers (as is her brother now) but there is a long line of photographers running through the male line in the family.  Both her father and her grandfather before him were keen photographers.  She describes her father and grandfather’s photography as more down the landscape route than her more fashion and people-focused work.

Currently, the family are sifting through her grandparent’s attic and finding a treasure trove of his history through the photos that he chose to take in his lifetime…a moving and fascinating journey for anyone, but for one with such an interest in photography, the use of old cameras and printing techniques, it is a fascinating journey. (She has just talked her school into buying an old slide format camera to experiment with.)

The world of instagram is one that is an inspiration to Tegan and it can also offer up unexpected  opportunities.  It was through a post on that social media platform that she found herself involved in the ‘We Are Hairy People’ (WAHP) world of creativity.  WAHP are a hand painted clothing brand based in Bristol.  Tegan entered their world as a model, but attending photo shoots it was quickly apparent that she had a lot to offer on the other side of the camera too.  A failed trip to London Fashion Week with a bunch of like- minded people was enough to light a fire under the young Tegan (she was 15 at the time).  Their trip failed as they didn’t have the correct passes etc, it was dismal she explains, she knew then that she never wanted to be the person on the outside looking in, she needed a piece of that action.

Starting in the summer of the following year, Tegan went where most teenagers would fear to dread, she picked up the phone.  With the ever present encouragement of her parents, she compiled a list of online bloggers and magazines and anyone who might possibly need a camera for hire at that year’s fashion week.   She set about the task of phoning each and every one, many just hung up, others were rude, and yet she persisted.

Eventually she hit upon ‘Who’s Jack London’ who are a cool online blog for all things art and creative culture in London.  In September she hopped on a train to London, alone.  Staying at a friend of a friend of her parents in London, she navigated the underground system and the even more confusing world of London Fashion Week by herself.  She knew nobody.

She set herself up in the photography pit and started to shoot – long hard days vying for space at top catwalk shows with professional, more experienced and competitive photographers, this feisty 16-year-old held her ground.  At night she edited the hundreds of photos taken and delivered them to her commissioning editor.

At the end of her week she returned to her life in Frome, where she had started a new school and was studying for her AS-levels.  I might add that this extra curricular work was self-financed through her part-time job.

It is rare that you would find such a driven teenager, but it would seem that little holds this determined character back.  When I ask her where her self confidence comes from she credits her parents, declaring that her father gave her the technical confidence with a camera. She reminisces about her first trip to Lacock with him where he showed her the basics of camera use…and where better to start a career in photography I might add.

She also credits her mother as a driving force, a supportive force in her life who picked her up whenever she received a knock back and encouraged her to reach for her dreams (she’s had a few…one photographer who she did an internship with told her in not such a nice manner that her work was not good enough).

She also says that she is from a competitive family who are ardent cyclists (she has many achievements in that field too, one of which was competing in a race in front of Buckingham Palace) and who always insisted that even as a small girl that she order her own food in restaurants etc.

When I ask Tegan what next.  She replies that she has her A-levels to consider, but that she is currently qualifying as a personal trainer.  This is her back up plan she explains, just in case her daring head first approach into the creative industries doesn’t quite happen immediately.

Her intention is to go to London where she will study an art foundation course.   She is keen to surround herself with like-minded creatives and top notch studio facilities to fully explore her own artistic abilities.

I ask her what her ultimate aim is…she replies “To take advantage of any opportunities that come my way, yes some will fail but some won’t and they might lead me somewhere.”  When I ask what job she thinks she’ll end up doing she replies, “I’m not sure if it exists yet…maybe I’ll invent it!”….and you know, I think she just might!

CORRECTION FROM ISSUE 494

Sincerest apologies to last issue’s Human of Frome – Saffron Van Zwanenberg.  Alas, I sent the uncorrected version of her story to print.  Here follows correct information about Saffron’s academic life.

“Upon her return to the UK, Saffron took up her undergraduate place at Trinity College in London and then went on to a postgraduate at The Royal College of Music. She eventually graduated at The Royal College Opera School with distinction and as a Junior Fellow.

“And correct more detailed information about the future plans for Jackdaws.

“…planning permission and funding have been secured for an extension which will see a new teaching studio built on site and an ambitious programme of workshops (over 40) delivered annually alongside award-winning (Best Classical Music Education Initiative prize won in 2016 & 2017) outreach projects which reach upwards of 6,000 children every year.”

  • Local leaders meet for inaugural Frome Summit

A meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between Frome Town Council and Somerset Council was held recently at the town hall.

Hosted at Frome Town Hall and attended by MP Anna Sabine, the summit brought together Frome and Somerset councillors and senior officers to discuss some of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing Frome. These included housing, transport, health and wellbeing, the local economy and opportunities for young people.

Discussions throughout the day highlighted a shared ambition to ensure Frome remains a thriving, creative and inclusive town while also addressing growing pressures around housing affordability, infrastructure and access to services.

Leader of Somerset Council Bill Revans said, “It was fantastic to hear so many ideas about how Somerset Council and Frome Town Council can work together and to explore how we can strengthen our collaboration in the future for the benefit of our residents.”

  • Kate Bush flash mob and town-wide drone photo

Residents are invited to dress as Kate Bush and join a joyful flash mob up Catherine Hill as part of the Frome Connects project this month.

Inspired by the resurgence of Kate Bush’s iconic song ‘Running Up That Hill’, the event on Saturday 30th May, will feature simple choreography from the original 80s video and will be led by Ginny Adams of Mojo Moves.

At 12.15pm, St John’s Church bells will ring out with ‘Running Up That Hill’, performed by Tony Hodges, before local photographer Chris Bailey captures a town-wide drone shot at approximately 12.30pm.

Participants are encouraged to wear grey and optional shaggy brown wigs although organisers stress that no dance experience or actual running is required.

  • Orchardleigh Ladies host successful Solheim Cup day

Orchardleigh Golf Club’s Ladies’ Section held their own version of the Solheim Cup on Tuesday 5th May, with Europe taking on the Rest of the World in a closely contested competition.

The format saw nine holes of fourball better ball followed by nine holes of match play. The result was finely balanced, with Europe securing victory by 6½ points to 5½ after edging the match play.

Sue Sweet, captain of the Europe team, was presented with the trophy by Lady Captain Jan Light.

Players enjoyed sunny conditions and the event was well received by all who took part.

  • Frome woman takes on open water swim challenge for women’s health

A local woman with endometriosis is aiming to complete nine open water swims this month, reflecting the average nine years it takes to get a diagnosis in the UK.

Poppy Taylor, a PhD student, started the challenge just six weeks after having surgery for endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a whole-body inflammatory condition in which cells similar to those lining the womb grow elsewhere. Symptoms can include heavy, painful periods, pelvic pain, bladder and bowel issues, fertility issues and fatigue. There is currently no cure.

Poppy said, “I first saw a GP about my symptoms at 19 and, as these got worse, I spent years going back and forth but with no answers. At one point I was misdiagnosed with IBS and essentially told I was making it up. It wasn’t until I was 26 when a scan for another health issue found endometriomas (ovarian cysts caused by endometriosis) that I was eventually put on the path for surgery.

  • Young rugby trio represent county

Three players from Frome RFC Academy have represented Somerset at under-17 level.

Angus, Leo and Stan played their part in the county side’s impressive 29-10 away victory over Cornwall earlier this month.

“The Club is extremely proud and wish them and Somerset all the very best for their next fixture,” said Matt Warnock from the club.

  • Electric bus launched in Frome

A new, 16-seat electric bus has been launched in Frome providing the town with the latest generation of passenger vehicles.

Somerset Council has launched its first public service electric bus with the 30 service in Frome. The vehicle is low floor, easily accessible, wheelchair friendly and comes with zero emissions.

The new vehicle complements the fleet of electric First buses already running on routes across the county. Somerset Council says it is a ‘lifeline’ for residents needing to reach town centre services and being electric, is more sustainable and less reliant on fossil fuels.

  • Frome woman takes on 63-marathon challenge to mark 63rd birthday

A keen runner from Frome is aiming to cover the equivalent distance of 63 marathons this year as part of a charity challenge linked to her age.

Julie Cullen, who turns 63 this year and was born in 1963, is running the equivalent of 63 marathons over the course of 2026 to raise funds for Somerset Sight and Cancer Research UK.

To fit the challenge around her self-employed work in education, Julie runs at least 10km, around six miles, at 6am most days.

Since starting in January, she has completed the equivalent of 20 marathons. She said, “Some mornings I don’t know if I really want to but as soon as I get out, I am absolutely fine. I turn 63 this year and was born in 1963, so I felt I had to do something to mark that.”

Julie is fundraising for Somerset Sight, which provides practical support for blind and visually impaired people across Somerset.

  • Safety concerns continue over pothole ‘epidemic’

Potholes in Frome continue to cause safety concerns among residents, with reports that the situation has not improved.

After more than 100 people contacted the Frome Times earlier this year, one resident has highlighted several areas still in need of urgent attention.

They pointed to a “dangerous cluster” of potholes at the junction between New Road and Wallbridge Road, saying traffic is being forced to slow almost to a stop to avoid damage.

“It feels really dangerous and is an accident waiting to happen,” the resident said. “I have encountered cars nearly going into the back of my vehicle because I am having to completely slow down to get across the road. I don’t know why we have to get to the point where people have safety concerns before the local authorities listen and take action.”

  • Pop-up shop closes after £37,000 fundraising success

A pop-up charity shop run by Frome Rotary Club has raised £37,000 in just five months for four charities.

The shop, based in the Westway Precinct, has now closed after raising the funds for Fair Frome, We Hear You (WHY), the Frome Skatepark Project and End Polio Now.

The club, which celebrated the centenary of its charter in Frome in December, opened the shop in the former Post Office premises as part of its centenary programme.

Although the original plan had been to close the shop after Christmas as stock levels fell, the club decided to continue after learning that the WHY Appeal urgently needed to raise funds by the end of March.

President Richard Lines said, “We met WHY CEO Lucy Kitchener and decided to keep the shop going. We appealed for donations from the Frome community and dedicated all proceeds to WHY for the seven weeks leading up to the end of the appeal in March.”
