‘This belt was for Frome’ Boxer picks up his first professional belt

Frome’s Ryan Wheeler has won the British Challenge Belt after defeating Paul Holt in Bristol.

Ryan was originally scheduled to fight Jon Martinez of Spain at The Cheese and Grain, Frome, on Friday 2nd March but snowfall from ‘The Beast from the East’ had other plans, causing the bout to be postponed.

Ryan fought new opponent Paul Holt in Ashton Gate, Bristol, on Friday 16th March to clinch the British Challenge Belt, his first professional belt, and carry on his undefeated record.

Talking to the Frome Times Ryan said, “It has been over a week now since the fight and I still haven’t stopped smiling. I’m really happy with my performance. After my Frome fight was cancelled, due to the snow, I struggled to keep focused at first. I had been on such a  strict diet, now all I wanted to do is eat lots of food and take a rest from training. But, I regained my focus and got straight back to training for another two weeks before getting back into the ring.

“I was excited about fighting Paul Holt as he was considered to be a level above anyone I had boxed before. I knew it would be a challenge and  it certainly was my toughest fight to date. I felt like I was just winning  the fight after the first four rounds, then round five and six, Paul came back strong.

“I remember thinking he may have stolen those two rounds, so I needed a big finish in round seven and eight, which I also remember feeling I had dominated.

“Being undefeated defiantly feels me with massive confidence when stepping into the ring, but I still feel I have so much to learn.

“The support speaks for itself. I’ve had so many people congratulate me when walking around town. Everybody is posting about the fight on social media with lots of positive comments, which I would like to thank everyone for.

“I am currently taking a couple of weeks’ rest, although I am already struggling to sit still.  I am hoping to return to fight in  Frome early this summer for another step up in class and time to see what other Championship belts are available.

“I would like to give a massive thank you to everybody who supported me. Even with all the inconvenience when the fight was postponed, I still received a massive supporting crowd at Ashton Gate. This belt was for Frome.

“Thank you to everyone who makes up The Wheeler Team from training, management team and most importantly my sponsors: Piling Equipment Ltd, Quickprint MSN, Crew barbers, Postlebury Car & Commercial Recovery Ltd, Trainstation Gym, Rodden Road Cars, LAC Carpentry, Steeldoorsales, The Old Bath Arms Frome, Albright & Shiny, Paul Ryman Fitness, Paul Bailes Independent funeral celebrant, R.M.N the complete building service and JOT Flooring.”

If you attended the fight, Ryan has asked that any photos taken from the night are put on social media and Ryan is tagged using his Facebook or Instagram handle @oneryanwheeler.

  • Spotlight on: Frome Widows and Widowers

Every week, a group of people who have been bereaved meet in an upstairs room at the Cheese and Grain for social connection.

The Widows and Widowers group meets every Wednesday, enabling people who have lost their partners to meet others with shared experiences.

Group leader Marilyn said, “It can be really difficult for people who have lost their partners. It gives them a chance to come out and do things alone.”

Marilyn, who was widowed 16 years ago, said, “There are people in my group who lost their husbands 20 years ago.”

  • Local man to drive emergency aid to Ukraine

A local volunteer is driving to Ukraine in July to deliver an emergency vehicle and medical supplies to the war-torn country.

Martyn Starnes, chief executive of Frome Town Football Club, will travel to the western side of the country with volunteers from Medical Life Lines Ukraine, covering 1,200 miles over three and a half days.

“The situation in Ukraine is very dangerous and very volatile, particularly near the front line,” said Martyn, who also completed the journey in 2024.

“They’re in constant need of emergency vehicles to take not only the military but civilians to hospital and there is a never-ending demand for these vehicles.

“When we arrive, we hand them over to the locals to be positioned wherever they need to go throughout the country.

The B team had a disappointing defeat away to Wells and left empty handed but are hoping to bounce back next time when they are at home against Purnells B.

  • Frome Birth Talk chosen for funding boost

A Frome charity has been selected for a match-funding opportunity to further its work in supporting people through pregnancy, birth, parenthood and baby loss.

As part of this year’s Small Charity Week from 22nd to 29th June, all donations made to Frome Birth Talk via the Big Give website up to £2,500 will be matched, meaning supporters can help the charity reach twice as many families.

Frome Birth Talk offers free and low-cost counselling to anyone who is pregnant, has had a baby or has experienced baby loss within the previous two years. Alongside counselling, the charity runs five weekly drop-in groups for parents and their babies and young children, creating safe, welcoming spaces for connection and support.

  • Health information events at Frome Medical Practice

Two health information events are being held at Frome Medical Practice this month, aimed at supporting patients on key health topics.

The first event, a Pelvic Health Talk, is offered as part of the Women’s Health Hub at the practice and takes place on Tuesday 23rd June from 6pm to 7pm.

Organisers say, “Many women experience symptoms of poor pelvic health in silence but it doesn’t have to be that way. Patients are invited to come to the talk to learn more about common pelvic health issues, as well as ways to improve symptoms and support wellbeing. The session will be led by a pelvic health physiotherapist and aims to empower women to take control of their health.”

  • Friends cycle to Rome in once-in-a-lifetime charity adventure

A 1,300-mile journey from Frome to Rome is under way after two friends turned a casual pub idea into a six-week cycling challenge across three countries.

Frome resident Anton Grais set off with friend Joel Rooprai on 17th May and the duo will cycle for six weeks across three countries, crossing rural landscapes, busy cities and challenging mountain routes in the Alps.

They are aiming to raise £1,500, which will be split between Mind, the British Heart Foundation and the Royal British Legion.

The idea came following a ‘tipsy’ trip to the pub last year. They left their jobs – Anton worked in property and Joel in aerospace defence – to undertake the adventure.
