FROME Library is celebrating a brilliant summer of reading.
Over 685 children so far have signed up and are taking part in the national Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge 2017 at Frome Library. There was an excellent 20 per cent increase compared to last year.
The theme this year is Animal Agents. Children have been reading a wide variety of books, going on a treasure hunt, collecting sticker clues, meeting real life assistance and guide dogs and taking part in weekly activities, planned and run by Frome library staff and volunteers.
Inspired by the animal theme, local artist Kate Dixon has donated a sculpture, Monkey With A Book, to the library to inspire children to keep reading. The library has also seen the arrival of a new member of library staff, Inspector Sniffy, created by the library’s very own Karen Dorley. Inspector Sniffy, a life size model based on Karen’s own dog, is currently on watch in the children’s library. Later in the year he will be leaving the library for a new life as a working dog with Canine Partners.
Cerian Amery, library supervisor said, “It is fantastic that so many children have been taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge this year. It is an excellent introduction to choosing books to read for pleasure. The staff have had great fun running our Animal Agents-themed activities over the summer and we all look forward to seeing how many participants manage to complete the challenge.”
County-wide, 7,369 children have joined in the challenge so far. The challenge runs until 9th September, so there is still time to finish six books. Every child who completes the challenge receives a certificate and an Animal Agents medal, with many local schools holding a Reading Challenge Awards assembly.
