Academic Feetwarmers bring jazz to Frome

LOCAL band The New Academic Feetwarmers will play at The Three Swans in King Street on Wednesday 25th April.

The eight-piece traditional jazz band will be playing for free at the pub with Jim Cook leading on soprano sax from 8pm until 10pm.

  • Painting of Frome man displayed at National Portrait Gallery A portrait of a Frome man is on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London after being selected as one of the finalists in a national competition. Mark Turner, a portrait model, was the subject of a painting by artist Lizet Dingemans from Raw Umber Studios in Stroud. Lizet was one of 54 finalists selected for The Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award 2026, with all finalists’ work being displayed at the National Portrait Gallery until 7th October.   • Rotary clubs take Frome children to Longleat More than 80 children from Frome enjoyed a day out at Longleat Safari Park as part of an annual event organised by Rotary clubs across Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset. Children from Vallis First School, Hayesdown First School, St John’s First School and young carers supported by The Pod attended the Rotary Children’s Fun Day last month, alongside their teachers, carers and helpers. The event was organised by Rotary clubs across the three counties, with support from the three Rotary clubs in Frome.   • Bridge club stalwart retires after 15 years A long-serving captain who helped bring Frome Bridge Club back from near extinction has stepped down from the committee after 15 years. Captain Marianne Lewin has retired to allow younger members to take the helm and continue the modernisation and growth of the club. To mark her retirement from the committee, Marianne has been made an honorary life member of the club.   • Fresh new look for popular Frome cafe A cafe in Frome has installed a new bespoke counter as part of a recent refurbishment project with a local furniture company. Rye Bakery, on Whittox Lane, has introduced the new counter to better showcase its popular range of pastries, sourdough breads and freshly made food. The counter was designed by Rye Bakery owner Owen Postgate in partnership with Somer Furniture, a local company that makes sustainable cabinetry.   • Have your say on travel, transport and getting around Residents are invited to share their views and experiences of how they move and travel around Frome and surrounding areas as part of a new travel and transport plan. The new Frome Area Movement and Place Plan is being developed by Frome Town Council with Somerset Council and neighbouring parishes. It will look at how people move around Frome and the surrounding area, how communities are connected and how access to jobs, education, healthcare, shops, services and leisure opportunities can be improved. During summer there will be opportunities for residents to share their views on issues such as walking, cycling, public transport, road safety, accessibility, parking and connections between villages and nearby towns.   • New volunteering hub already helping people get involved in Frome A new volunteering drop-in at The Good Heart is already helping people across Frome find ways to get involved in their community, just weeks after launching. Get Involved Frome, a pilot project from Spark Somerset’s Volunteering for Health initiative, is supporting people to find volunteering opportunities that match their interests, skills and availability through the Spark a Change website. The weekly Friday drop-in has welcomed people of all ages, including young people looking to gain work experience and strengthen their CVs. Many visitors have been keen to find opportunities outdoors, supporting nature and wildlife projects, while others have been looking for roles in community cafés and local charities.   • Frome teen wins pickleball silver after injury comeback A teenager from Frome has won a silver medal at a national pickleball championship just months after returning to the sport following a serious arm injury. Kai Santano, 15, competed in the Young Persons Championships at Courtside in Stourbridge in June, taking second place in the mixed-age doubles category alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea. The result comes only four months after Kai returned to play following surgery for a double break to his left arm and a partial wrist dislocation, sustained while skateboarding in Victoria Park just one week before he was due to compete in the National Championships. His mum Laurie said, “He absolutely destroyed his arm and was in a full cast from October until December. He wasn’t allowed to do any contact sports until 1st February.   • Mark of excellence awarded to Frome green spaces An international mark of excellence for parks and green spaces has been awarded to Frome’s Victoria Park and Mary Baily Playing Field. The Green Flag Award was presented after judges visited in April, who explored the wide range of activities, facilities and community projects that take place across the parks and how they are managed by Frome Town Council. Assessors praised the parks’ welcoming atmosphere, strong community involvement and features such as the toddler play area, community bowls club, murals, a carved bench created from a heritage tree felled in 2025 due to a fungal infection and the community cafe.
